So I guess the Blender Conference was going on over the last few days. I haven't caught up on all the videos, but I'm wistful for missing it and thinking, again, how I'd love to return. I'm by no means a really in-depth Blender user, but I loved the heck out of BCon 2019.

I don't know if I'm anthropomorphizing "the algorithm". My partner mocks me for the vehemence of my dislike for advertising. I browse using an adblocker, but if I'm watching YouTube on the AppleTV I can't prevent ads. But I'm pretty quick with the mute button.

I've been experimenting a bit with Qwant, a France-based search engine, as an alternative to the American search engines. They say all the right things about privacy, search bias, and not selling data. I don't *love* it yet, but I'm giving it a try.

So I'm watching random YouTube videos, and I happen upon a video critiquing a right-wing manly man making fun of leftists (who he views as lacking in manly man qualities). Neither the original video nor the critique are especially great. But I realize that I recognize the musical background.

I've been at this work event for the last two days. Hosted in a downtown building with big presentation space and breakout rooms. Like a lot of such rentable spaces, they have inclusive washrooms. One of the bathroom options is an "all gender" washroom. I feel like that shouldn't be unusual.

Moneris, the Canadian system used to process 5 billion of transactions annually for 325,000 points of sale, is being sold by the owners (RBC and BMO) to a US private equity firm. I don't think this protects Canadian digital sovereignty. I signed a petition for Ottawa to intervene, and you can too.

On Facebook, Wil Wheaton made a Rocky Horror Show post that ended with the phrase, "Janet! Doctor Scott! Janet! Brad! Rocky!" And I expected the comments to be comment-after-comment of people saying "Ugh!" But, unusually, that wasn't the case. Am I an old?

Canadians: I need insight. I used the phrase "I didn't twig to the fact that..." on a Discord chat and that lead to a "Are you British?" From an American. I *think* that's a normal thing to say here in Canada, but I also watched a lot of British TV growing up. Would you say that?

Around a year ago, my partner and I watched Sook-Yin Lee's film, _Paying for It_ (based on the Chester Brown graphic novel of the same name). There are recurring scenes in the film in which the fictionalized Chester has lunch with a group of his comic-making friends.

Apparently there's a (another) remake of _The Thomas Crown Affair_. While I generally wish Hollywood would embrace more original material, the new version looks good. Going by the trailer, Michael B. Jordan really carries off the suave energy that Pierce Brosnan channelled in the 1999 version.

The YouTube algorithm suggested that I watch a recording session of the song "Camelot" (from the musical of the same name). I've only ever seen one production of _Camelot_ (when I was in university at Waterloo), but my greatest familiarity with the song comes from a parody version in a FASS show.

The framing of this as "crashing" frustrates me, because this was absolutely a stunt arranged through & with the support of Comic Con, probably to avoid the protests & pushback if people had known about it in advance. It's not a fun perk for fans, it's stealth marketing of a domestic abuser.

I grew up in Sarnia, on the border with Michigan. When I was growing up, the border was pretty low friction: if you lived in Sarnia, it was common to pop across the border to fill up the car with gas or have dinner at the yummy fried chicken place in Port Huron.

I would have said that I first saw him in _Dingoes Ate My Baby: The Motion Picture_ (_Evil Angels_ in North America) where he played the terrible-on-the-stand husband of Meryl Streep. But it turns out that he was also the star in the third Omen movie, which I saw in the early 80s.
