Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Interesting. By “full schedules”, you mean you’re including games not yet played? Are you using an expected result or something for those games? 110
Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Alternatively, we could just take each team's average game rating (preseason projections are still baked in to the opp adjustments, but this isolates "how have you played to date"): 1. Utah 2. Georgia 3. Notre Dame 4. Texas 5. Indiana 6. Miami 7. Kansas St 8. Alabama 9. Northwestern 10. Penn St 211
Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 22/09/2026There are a couple of ways to work this out. If we ignored preseason projection data altogether, FEI ratings would be wildly different in spots: (1/??) 1. Notre Dame 2. Utah 3. Georgia 4. Penn St 5. Mississippi St 6. Florida 7. Texas 8. South Carolina 9. Pittsburgh 10. Kansas St 151

Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I don’t have pre-2007 game possessions in my data set, but I think it’s notable that the biggest shift in the chart was from 2007 to 2008 — the clock prior to ‘08 stopped on all out-of-bounds plays until the next snap. I suspect years 2007 and prior had way more possessions as a result. 020
Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I'm hesitant to reduce it to *less* or *worse* football, though it is certainly *different* football than the "peak tempo" era. I wrote a bit about it in the offseason here: bcftoys.com/whiteboard/c... Also see: www.espn.com/college-foot... And: www.nytimes.com/athletic/748... 350
Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 15/09/2026The 2026 season is very young (only 100 FBS vs FBS games through Week 2), but the average number of possessions per game continues to trend downward. 1122

Brian Fremeau @bcfremeau.bsky.social · 09/09/2026As far as my ratings calculations are concerned, the biggest difference between 13-12 and 12-7 isn't going to show up in FEI, it's going to show up in strength of record. 040

College football data work starts with collecting and combing game information from trusted sources that aren't always in alignment, and making choices and tradeoffs about what to keep or discard. 031
