We just don't have that great of a track record in this country of adapting our infrastructure in reaction to transportation technologies very thoughtfully (and haven't for a century).

I don't think that autonomous vehicles should be banned, just well taxed and regulated, but I *am* concerned that none of our levels of government will be able to effectively respond to the additional VMT I believe will result from the low cost and ease of its use on full deployment.

Forgive the YouTube video link, but Ray Delahanty (former Portland-area transportation planner) made a video last year on the interaction between regional transportation plans, travel demand models, and mode share goals, with Metro used as an example: youtu.be/NgJ998KHBpc?... (3/3)

but we have a habit of reacting to roads with high throughput or roads with unrealistic projections of high throughput with added lanes, rather than considering transit priority, our active transportation network, or zoning changes to reduce trip lengths. (2/3)

Sorry for the poor resolution on the graph— I lifted it from Ben Fryback who has them in full here: bsky.app/profile/bfry... I don't know exactly what inputs cause WashCo's traffic planners to produce projects that add so many more lanes than other local jurisdictions in the metro area, (1/3)

Not that you have direct control over this (and the Century Blvd. Extension is far past the point of no return), but @orobharris.bsky.social why must our locality spend hundreds of millions of dollars on lane adding road projects instead of, say, installing sidewalks to our public schools and parks?

Yeah This frame from the MSNOW livestream is real, although who put up the fence and then took it down again after 45 minutes, and why, I'm not sure of In years past they've put a fence up around the reflecting pool at around this time for the 4th of July fireworks, so it could be related to that

This is along the lines of what I meant by 'proposals for regulation and or taxation' in my original reply. If we were to allow them within our city, we should require them to actually follow the laws that drivers often don't (the speed limit, parking in bike lanes, driving in bus only lanes),

Again, though, not claiming that the tech is necessarily ready now, just that it has significantly improved and has scaled to tens of millions of rides across a dozen cities in recent years, and is likely to continue to improve.

See my reply agreeing that they should disallow the product now, but yeah, I set myself up for this response :P I understand having doubts about it, but the safety data looks fairly significant to me, and the tech isn't 'a few years away', miles driven autonomously have skyrocketed in the past two.

No data behind this on hand, but if it isn't safer right now, it will be a few years from now, and it'll be worth investing in argumentation and policy proposals for regulation and or taxation beyond that for human drivers, to get ahead of the curve on the issue.

75,000 more ballots estimated from LA County as well now, but I don't know if turnout predictions were already expecting that

It'll be interesting to see what those final dropboxes look like (hopefully) tomorrow. Steyer probably still has a chance if they're a significantly better than these regular dropboxes, but how much better depends on the other counties.

Bavadin @bavadin.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Not that it makes that big of a difference. It's also worth noting that the Prop 50 election preliminary estimation was actually a slight overprojection of the final count. The elections are so different that something like that shouldn't happen here either though.

Bavadin @bavadin.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
The only thing I'm not sure about is whether in '22 there were some votes posted after the election day release but before the preliminary estimate, so not counted in either (this year they released a ballot count update with the preliminary estimate).

Gas *should* be this expensive, to account for the externalities of burning it (to the climate and human health). It's only that the increase should be by taxes, not by an illegal war of aggression. Then, we should spend those taxes on making our state a better place to live in.

ODOT is closing the I-5 south ramp at the Rose Quarter for over a month in September. Many of us have suggested a low-cost RQ I-5 "improvement" project could/should include ramp closures. Imagine if we studied how drivers navigated this temporary closure and the impact to the area.

Logical extensions of this system could include the SW line, a Powell line, and a 2-mile extension of the north-south trunk on MLK to Alberta. These three lines could all meet at an OHSU transit center, allowing fast transfers between SW, SE, and NE.

It’s theoretically possible self-driving cars could be designed and governed in a way to support a transition into an alternative to car dependency in American cities. But would anyone bet money those companies and their army of lobbyists and our feckless governments are gonna let that happen?
