vaguely annoyed to see the "I called it" posts in response to blog.rust-lang.org/2026/08/20/s... we knew this was possible when we built crates.io. everybody knows that it was possible. you are downloading and executing code off the internet.

We are excited to announce that we can successfully use Rust's portable SIMD on the GPU. This has never been done before. www.vectorware.com/blog/simd-on... Supporting Rust's `core::simd` enables existing Rust code to work on the GPU and makes GPU programming more ergonomic.

Godbolt's Compiler Explorer now supports build systems (like cargo). This is so cool! I use Compiler Explorer quite a bit when playing with AArch32 stuff in Rust, to check I'm getting the kind of instructions I expected but I was limited to single files. Having cargo support is game changing.

oh yeah absolutely. unfortunately, after having a scare with my debit card, i think i'm generally done with the privacy mindset in favor of a security mindset. which Graphene is great for... except for finances/payments :(

I would flash it back in a heartbeat if it had full GPay support :)

I feel that! but I just switched back to stock _bc_ Graphene lacked GPay. it's really hard to live without that stuff in the modern world... especially while staying safe with your identity and finances ;D

Translating the entire Rust compiler into C is the kind of wild, ambitious project that makes me love our builder community. The crustc project is doing this to clean up the bootstrap chain. I love seeing developers tackle the trust-root problem by building actual, working alternatives.

I like the vertical bar syntax. As of a couple years ago, the `rustc` folks said the only reason it's not implemented is due to the compiler's architecture it's not currently geared toward anonymous ADTs and would apparently require extensive changes

The ability to do shared-memory concurrency imposes a massive burden on the ecosystem, because everyone keeps having to ask "is this dependency thread-safe". Most languages should just stick to message passing and the actor model (99% of the time, it's a better way to build software anyway)

I don't even think git being licensed more permissively (eg, MPL2 or something) would be a bad thing! It would be a net positive for humanity probably. Just, like. Using AI to rewrite and relicense one of the single most-used pieces of GPLed software is actually a declaration of licensing war.

Rust constants are slowly but surely getting more powerful! On stable you can parse constants from environment variables. I remember having to pull in weird crates & macros to be able to do this. #rustlang
const TASK_COUNT: usize = {
    let input = if let Some(string) = option_env!("PERFMON_TASK_COUNT") {
        string
    } else {
        "16"
    };
    match usize::from_str_radix(input, 10) {
        Ok(val @ 2..) => val,
        Ok(_) => panic!("PERFMON_TASK_COUNT must be 2 or higher"),
        Err(_e) => panic!("Could not parse `PERFMON_TASK_COUNT`"),
    }
};
