Awful news. As part of the coalition urging NatureScot to recognise the importance of the Garnock Estuary and designate it as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, we share the anger felt by Buglife and the Ardeer Action Group that precious and irreplaceable sand dune continues to be destroyed.

Reminder that you can still follow our tracked knots as they gear up for their migration. Nephtys (dark blue off Cuxhaven) continued its journey North last night and is now up with it's compatriots on the German/Danish Wadden Sea border! Housing minister announces exemption to 10% net gain rule in England for smaller developments The government has broken its promise to protect nature by weakening planning rules for housing developers, groups have said. While developers once had to create “biodiversity net gain” (BNG), meaning creating 10% more space for nature on site than there was before the building took place, housing minister Matthew Pennycook announced exemptions to this rule on Tuesday. China’s plans to cut emission too weak to stave off global catastrophe, say experts
Xi suggested US is not rising to the climate challenge in his UN speech, but critics say new cuts fall ‘far short’ of what is necessary China announced its plans for future cuts to greenhouse gas emissions on Wednesday, producing a scathing response from experts who said they were much too weak to stave off global catastrophe. The world’s second-biggest economy is also the biggest source of carbon dioxide by far, and its decisions on how far and how fast to shift to a low-carbon model will determine whether the world can stay within relatively safe temperature bounds. 🪶🌎🦜Can you imagine seeing flocks of native parakeets in Illinois? 😩 More info about the Carolina Parakeet in Burgio et al, 2017 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Graphic showing a photo of a taxidermied Carolina Parakeet by Ryan Mandelbaum. Text on the graphic says "Unsolicited Bird Fact: Huge flocks of Carolina Parakeets once called the US home before some
combo of over-hunting, deforestation, disease and invasive species led to their extinction. Flocks were shot en masse by European settlers in part because they tended not to"flee under fire, but to
remain near wounded conspecifics that were calling in distress." (crying face emoji)
Carolina parakeets were found in the Midwest, Florida,& along the SE coast. They were associated with Bald Cypress trees, & were one of the few species that could eat their unopened cones. They also ate toxic cockleburs & were immune to their toxin, which in turn may have made the birds toxic to predators.
