Here's a neat thing! My mom retired after 25+ as a children's librarian at public libraries yesterday. (It was very cool! Hundreds of former Story Hour kids arrived, some as adults!) I let Ed Markey's office know in case they wanted to send a nice email back and they sent this! He's still got it!

I am sure the Coal Baron is magically gonna reverse his position on lab leak when a Sarbecovirus with a functional FCS at S1/S2 is found, right? Of course not, he will double down and claim that when nature created it, isn´t it so much more likely the lab found it secretly and used it as template?

Honestly, @flodebarre.eurosky.social has singlehandedly done more to correct the record on the many falsehoods motivated actors and conspiracy theorists have set in the world that the world's journalists combined; who instead were often overeager to amplify, rather than verify, these stories.
Using it, Yu’s Table 3.2 could almost perfectly be reproduced. Much ado about nothing? Not quite: the story is informative because it is typical of the false claims that DRASTIC, aided by some scientists, managed to spread online and in the media.
Ulterior motives

This story is yet another example of the mindset of leakers: they have decided in advance that WIV, and Shi’s group in particular, are hiding and manipulating data, and so they search for incriminating evidence. As a result, when faced with apparent contradictions, leakers chose to accuse Shi and more generally Chinese scientists of lying and manipulating data, instead of considering the possibility that they themselves might be incorrect.

Here, even if there had been a few differences between the sequences of Ra4991 used by Yu and of RaTG13 published on Genbank, these differences were few anyway: they were not relevant to the origin of SARS-CoV-2. Highlighting the differences only served to tarnish Shi’s reputation. Just Askig Questions serves as plausible deniability, but some people explicitly wrote what the point of this kind of questioning was:
Steven Quay’s response to “reviewer” comment during an internal review at the State Department, around Jan 6, 2021 (highlighting added). While about RaTG13, this example is not about Yu’s table, which was not public yet at the time.
Source: State FOIA 2022-00062 A-00000861832 page 95.

The story also illustrates (once again) the importance of controls. Trying to reproduce the whole table instead of just the line corresponding to Ra4991 already returned different results, even with the already public sequences from other groups. This discrepancy was already the sign that the core issue was the method and likely not the data.

Finally, even though the table could successfully be reproduced in December 2021, to my knowledge, none of those who accused Shi of manipulating data – on Twitter, to Nature, or in Le Monde – have ever apologized for the false accusation

At this point, Baric & UNC have nothing to lose unless Baric forgot/lied about not knowing more about virus research and interests in Wuhan.

HHS is debarring Baric (no more federal funding) and he has retired from UNC.
