We shouldn't have to cut our working hours or cut back on essentials to make ends meet. By expanding childcare we can save families £10,000 per child. We're pledging: 🟢570 hours of funded childcare for every child from 6 months to 2 years 🟢1140 hours for all 2 year olds
Scottish Greens will deliver free flexible childcare for all children aged 6 months to 2 years. Let's demand better. On May 7th vote Scottish Greens.

2,400 artists in NYC got $1,000 per month in basic income for 18 months beginning in 2022. Same as in Ireland, the results were overwhelmingly positive. Artists spent more time on their art and became more satisfied with the quality and impact of their work. DO UBI source.washu.edu/2026/04/guar...
However, we also found that the program improved participants’ artistic output, including the time they could dedicate to their art and their satisfaction with the quality and the impact of their work.”

‘What art could we produce as a society if our artists could invest more time and money in their craft?’

Stephen Roll
The GI program was found to reduce financial stress and debt; increase artists’ ability to invest time in their art; increase motivation and productivity; and improve mental health, while showing no reduction in other sources of income.

What I took out of tonight's C4 leaders' debate was 2 things: we need more immigration in Scotland, and tax is an investment in public services not an oncost. Will vote accordingly.

I think it’s a perfectly reasonable opinion. I don’t agree, but I certainly don’t think it’s silly.

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
These are all really useful points, because they all represent avoidable pitfalls that the Greens need to keep on top of if they want to keep this momentum. Communication, policy, and demonstrable results are key.

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Hm. Perfectly reasonable reading of the situation. Me, I do think a green surge has a strong foundation. Green support has been increasing steadily for decades. Surges happen, like in 2014 in Scotland. This is new. This is airtime!

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
An interesting point. My hope is that a strong showing in the local elections, as well as in Holyrood and the Senedd, will give greens a chance to make real differences to many communities, with the benefit of good communication in the media. Then when the election comes, they won’t feel so new.

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
So, I guess people do want better worker’s rights, better welfare, fairer taxes, and all the other social goods that are lacking. To avoid fading between now and the next election, we need to show that while reformed left-wing Labour may talk the talk, Greens are the ones who will walk the walk

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Maybe I’m being naive, but this feels different. Pre-Trump, pre-omnicrisis, definitely, I think your reading would be spot on. Today, a quarter of the way into the 21st century, with the old free market mask really starting to slip, I think greens have really found their time.

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Hi Richard. What makes you think that Greens will fade before the next general election? I have been thinking that about Reform UK recently, but it seemed less likely with the Green Party. I’d be interested to hear more about yr view, as it’s quite different from how I’ve been seeing the situation.

Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Or is the question more about how green economics in Britain would work in general? Which is also, of course, a useful and interesting question
000
Barney @barneymhiggins.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
It's a fair question. Are you interested in the costs of rent controls, or the cost of meeting the Green Party target of causing 50% of new housing to be social housing, or both? I am not an expert, but it's a useful conversation, and I'm up for exploring it in good faith.

Well said. It strikes me that politics has got used to peddling untruths and half truths with the tacit support of a compliant media. But Zack Polanski won’t stop telling the truth. Ordinary people know it’s the truth, it reflects the reality of our lives. It’s very hard to lie your way out of that.
