I think you're probably not British, or you're young. In England in particular, we have a long tradition of men playing women on stage, from Shakespeare, to Panto, to Monty Python. It's not laughing at the men in dresses OR celebrating identity, it's something else, and a traditional English thing.

No, and I agree good bike lanes are great everywhere, and I have advocated for them! In my opinion, good public transport is better for most of us though, for many reasons, especially if adapting places that have been designed for cars like the US.

Fair enough, but without good cycle infrastructure, getting a bike is still not very useful. Also, it does depend on the ability to ride a bike, which is just not possible for many of us! I don't drive either, so we do only have one (old, cheap) car. Public transport for the win for me!

Yes, I'd like to hope things are changing, but I'm not feeling it here in California, I'm afraid. And of course, it's a narrow band of people who can use cargo bikes for their daily life, even with infrastructure - better public transport would be my first choice!

Agreed, but currently in the US and it's almost impossible to manage without a car- at least where I am. We had no car for several weeks when I got here, and there is almost no public transport. No food shops or launderettes in walking distance. Such a car-centric society.

I dreamed about carbonara last night, and even in my dreams it wasn't as gorgeous as this

I try to aim for tolerance, but things like this make it so much harder. At least it's gone now.

I mistyped an email sign off as “all the bees” instead of “all the best”. I reckon I’m going to stick with it. I can’t think of anything negative that can possibly come of wishing someone all the bees.

My family really enjoyed this book, and my husband gave it to a friend in the US who says it was very helpful (he hadn't considered neurodivergence before for his unease). Thank you!

It didn't 'explore' or 'study', and it certainly didn't 'understand the issue'. Using language that makes it sound like it did, and like it has intelligence and a personality, is contributing to the downward spiral of humanity.

Yes, I only grow things I like to eat, although my best year of growing cherry tomatoes was the summer I discovered I was allergic to cherry tomatoes...

Californian coastal redwoods. Really interesting comparing it to UK woodland and seeing the various niches filled in different ways
A dirt path curving through very tall, straight coastal redwoods. There is a small stream crossing the path with a plank over for stepping over. The sun is filtering through the trees.

I do, she only had a black and white telly so we had to pay close attention to the commentator to know what was happening

You absolutely should be proud! I loved it, and have recommended it to several people who loved it- at least one who said it changed his life for the better.

I was just talking about my primary school nature table yesterday! I wonder if primary schools still do that. Lovely picture, exactly how I remember it.

No, it's the Together Alliance (for love, hope and unity against the far right) marching in solidarity with the No Kings protests in the US. However, many of us here in the UK would also prefer no kings!

I have been a sewing machine collector for many years- it will probably have a serial number too, on a little metal plaque, so you can look it up online. 1886 sounds about right for the model though! Lovely example.

Sorrel and nettles, ramsons and three-cornered leek, hazelnuts and chestnuts, blackberries and apples. Plenty of tasty foraging in Cornwall, and lots of fun collecting!

I don't think this example was using twitter as a news source, but as a news story. I do believe the cesspit of twitter is socially significant, however much I would like it not to be. But I do agree about the enshittification, and the quicker it disappears the better.

Do you really feel that twitter conversations don't affect us socially? That what happens on twitter stays on twitter and doesn't affect the outside world?

I don't really get it. Are you telling me you use an untrustworthy source because it's quicker, but then you have to double check it?
