The 1e AD&D books were loaded with comics.
I'm unsure if a "serious" RPG could get away with that today. Paranoia, sure. It's a silly RPG. But I bet if a new D&D came out tomorrow with joke comics sprinkled throughout, people would outrage at it sending the "wrong message" and not being serious.
