Just as the Odyssey is an ancient legend about getting lost as a divine punishment, there is also a rich history of literature about people seeking the disorientation and isolation of getting lost and having to find themselves/their way in a new locale. We contain multitudes, and always have.

I would say it depends on your definition of “a lot” but really, my point is more advocating against being reductive and generalizing.

I would remain wary of glib oversimplification, or else you’ll sound like one of the recurring generational scolds from a @paulisci.bsky.social thread. I know many younger folks who would rather a flip phone or to get off the grid, these things are hardly universal.

This is pretty short-sighted to me; the "feeling of being lost" still exists, it just changed. (For example, a generation ago, being without one's cell phone would not induce that feeling, but now it could.)

Your concerns about her alleged flirtation with antisemitism (as demonstrated by the instagram episode to which you have repeatedly referred) can and should give you pause. It gave me pause. But it has been in no way evident in her actual work or content, and certainly has never risen to advocacy.

JonAHHH! Bamel @bamelawyer.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
There is also an unsupported leap in your assertions here. You have stated she has flirted with antisemitism or had to apologize for liking antisemitic content. You have also claimed she “preaches intolerance.” The latter is not shown by the former, even assuming that the former is true as stated.

And as a Jewish parent, I can safely say I have never once felt or observed an iota of evidence to suggest that she preaches intolerance towards my family. To anyone familiar with her work, the accusation is a self-discrediting one, revealing a significant ignorance of her advocacy.

She also then featured a young Palestinian girl whose leg had to be amputated in one of her videos. In that same video, she also features a Jewish family and learns how to count in Hebrew. Her position is very clearly pro-children, which then leads to anti-war, anti-apartheid, and anti-genocide.

Often times the value of public debate is not to persuade the other debater but to illustrate to uninvolved observers who has the superior case. Such is the case with this thread, and @skiskinnyskis.bsky.social does not realize how in over his head he is.

To tweak the prompt ever so slightly, I’d love a custom-built repertory staging of Hamlet and R&G, where (as best allows) entrances to one stage are exits from the other and vice versa. Or a triple staging of the Norman Conquests which are at least conceptually designed for that.

I once had a conversation about getting lottery winnings as a lump sum vs. an annuity with someone who was convinced the lump sum was preferable because the annuity was not inheritable in case they died, and because they couldn't guarantee that the state would be solvent before the annuity paid out.

Would have inspired much less controversy and response. I think this also relates to the greater geopolitical point; there is less room for nuance, for acknowledgment of outlier or individual experiences at the fringes, and too much insistence on absolutism (such as ideological purity). /3

Invites defensive responses from people (like myself) trained or skilled at fighting hypotheticals and defending/advocating for people in circumstances where all else is not equal. I think beginning with acknowledgment of nuance (like saying there’s a correct answer for “most” circumstances)… /2

I think the simplest way to explain this whole firestorm this week is a reaction to the certainty you expressed way back in your original posts. Yes, the math spells out a “correct” answer, all else being equal, but asserting certainty about the yougov poll respondents with a dismissive air… /1

As far as Internet rhetoric goes, @kathryntewson.bsky.social was hardly “vicious” - she made no reference to bodily functions or orifices, immutable genetic traits or nationalities, nor did she employ slurs or vulgarity. She merely had the temerity to insist on more perspectives than pure EV.

Indeed, @mjsdc.bsky.social seems (appropriately) more concerned about the attack on the principle of home rule than the meritis of the individual policy at issue here. Seems a categorical error to focus on the underlying policy rather than the actual argument addressed.

I have also read others who were similarly not aligned with his political views and were also quick to judge realize that they were mistaken and course correct, against their own personal proclivity. I personally do not have a dog in this fight except for context and truth.

The founder we should talk more about is Thomas Paine, who will fuck your shit up every time. Here he is in The Rights of Man just ripping into any ideas of "originalism" and that kind of garbage.
Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself, in all cases, as the ages and generations which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave, is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Man has no property in man; neither has any generation a property in the generations which are to follow. The parliament or the people of 1688, or of any other period, had no more right to dispose of the people of the present day, or to bind or to controul them in any shape whatever, than the parliament or the people of the present day have to dispose of, bind or controul those who are to live a hundred or a thousand years hence. Every generation is, and must be, competent to all the purposes which its occasions require. It is the living, and not the dead, that are to be accommodated.

“How much is a magical world worth?” A beautiful thread about Cabo Verde, the Peace Corps, and the World Cup:
Jill Tucker
@jilltucker
X.com
If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7

And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he's from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you'll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, "What's your name?" You will tell him and he will say,
"You were my teacher."
CABO VERDE
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 92K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
And across 30+ years and 6,000 miles you will hug a now man who tried to find you and remembered the songs you taught him and his classmates and he will apologize for how badly behaved they all were. And you will laugh and try not to cry and gape in wonder at at this crazy world.

Jill Tucker
@jilltucker

You will remember how much you love the World Cup. And what the Peace Corps meant to you. What those students, 40 to a class with no glass on the windows, meant to you.
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 62K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
Ivan, the grown man with a touch of grey in his beard, will tell you later he has struggled to describe what it meant to him to meet again - that he shared our photo with classmates.
And when he returns from watching the Cabo Verde game, we will try to find the words together.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h And then you read that the US
House of Representatives will vote a day before that game on an amendment to eliminate the Peace Corps, which costs 1/6 the price of the Tomahawk missiles the US used in the war on Iran.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker •20h And you wonder: How much is a magical world worth?

Not sure it's "liberal" per se, but probably counts, former Broadway star Laura Osnes was fired from an out-of-town show over anti-vaxx views in 2021. She was roundly rejected from the COVID-traumatized Broadway community, left NYC for Nashville, and has been doing "Great American Family" TV movies.
