The trans people I know (and if the govt is asking, I don’t know any) were all SO MUCH HAPPIER AND HEALTHIER after finally being able to be their true selves. I’m glad to say they are all supported by family and friends. Even then, it’s been tough on them in the current environment.

I’ve been working in the anti-fraud space for 16 years, specifically in consumer protection for the past two. If you think you are immune from being fooled, think again. I’ve seen PhDs, lawyers, young and old people from all backgrounds fall victim to clever scammers. It’s a scary time.

I wouldn't call DVDs 'low-tech' but they are durable. I bought CDs back when the technology was nascent (late 80s), and they still play fine - at least the ones that didn't get scratched. Back then, I remember people saying they would only last about 10 years.

I ordered three oil changes worth last week (which will last 1 year, I have a long commute). The price hasn’t gone up yet because I buy already expensive European oil for my fussy German car and the supplier had a lot in stock. However, I expect when they need to restock it’s going to hurt.

Been seeing a lot of discourse about online gambling, and realized I don’t know what parlay means other than in Pirates of the Caribbean. I am not planning to find out. I went to Vegas once, quickly lost the $50 I allowed myself to play with at a blackjack table, and that was enough gambling for me.

Also, the AG doesn't have original jurisdiction to bring criminal charges for anything other than Medicaid Fraud. The only time the AG's office prosecutes a non Med Fraud case is when a county asks them to step in. Even if Ellison had brought cases in FOF, they could only be civil cases.

I have heard of investigators falling prey but don’t know any personally. I think seeing so many types of scams makes us less susceptible, but I also know that no one is totally impervious.

Working as an investigator in consumer protection I have seen people from all walks of life get scammed, including PhDs, doctors, and lawyers. Scammers are clever manipulators, and sometimes people really WANT to believe in something so they ignore warning signs.

This is why I leave brewing to the experts--there is SO much to know. I brewed a couple of beers from kits, and while the results were decent, I decided I wasn't going down that rabbit hole. I'll stick to baking, which is technical enough. (I haven't got rid of the beer brewing equipment though 😆)

Medicaid fraud, but yes, it's pretty good. I worked at the US Attorney's Office in MN on Medicare/Medicaid fraud for 15 years. Minnesota is not anywhere near the top in health care fraud % nationwide. Joe Thompson is full of shit with his $9 billion figure.

Better than a cotton bag, okay, but that's a false dichotomy. Why not use the boxes that the food comes in? Costco doesn't use bags and people seem to manage. Or maybe hemp paper bags? There are other options. There is no real NEED for single use plastic bags. We got along fine before they existed.

The article uses false binaries to make single use plastic seem better. There are other options besides a cotton tote! I I've used the same recycled plastic shopping bags for 18+ years. How many single use bags would that be? Single use plastic is not good, even if better than some other options.
