baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026That was Sept! Let's see what I'm able to get to in Oct. Going to go back to IF and school assignments this month, but I plan to read Bring Up the Bodies and maybe get to some nonfiction. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026The Tainted Cup, by Robert Jackson Bennett. Kaiju biopunk fantasy detectives, neat! I liked how RJB builds his world: no rush, just enough info to contextualize the plot and keep you curious. For a fantasy novel, very restrained. Tore through it, really fun stuff. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Wolf Worm, by T. Kingfisher. The weakest of her "woman goes to rural south, spooky things occur" (Hollow Places is my fav) series, but I'd read a hundred of them if she wanted to keep writing them. The twist was a real "well, okay then" moment, but it was a fun & fast spooky season read. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Word for World is Forest, by UK Leguin (prob my favorite author). She grew to dislike this one, said it was too simplistically angry. It's not as complex as LHoD or even Earthsea, maybe, but as I'm angry about the same things she was in '72, this was cathartic. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I read Something Wicked This Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury as a teen, reread this month. Re: vintage sexism, "Women are warm clocks, nested in time" is a phrase I'll unfortunately never forget, but I appreciated the thesis that the fear of missing out makes you easily exploited. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel. I'd not read her before. I loved the 3rd person present, semi-non-linear voice. The associative narrative flow plays with memory in a way I loved. Really great book. Was I confusing Thomas and Oliver Cromwell until p. 300? Who can say. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026A Fire upon the Deep, a 90s novel by Vernor Vinge. Classic scifi vibe w.out vintage misogyny & racism. Loved the nonhuman species & the book's fascination with the commodification/weaponization of information & IT infrastructure. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I spent a LOT of the last year writing things, mostly IF games & library science master's assignments, and I was feeling pretty creatively drained. Made a real effort this month to start reading again, & thought I'd share what I read! 100

baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Unscientific human exceptionalism always bugged me, even as a kid. It's now no longer an irritation; the world is being burned for short-term profit under the guise of some unique human right and need. Can we ditch these unsupported biases and start encouraging kinship with the nonhuman? 030
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/2026This should be a story about how much our brains, the organ we use to experience the world and form thoughts about it and ourselves, share even with deep sea invertebrates. What about this makes us distinctly human?! 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/2026The *applications* have human significance (the research is really interesting!); the discovery is really about a deeply shared developmental history. The way it's framed is frankly misleading. 110
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/20268 paragraphs later: "The researchers learned this from examining developing mouse embryos." Ah, there it is. 6 paragraphs after that: "They found the same two-origin brain pattern in chickens; zebrafish; and, remarkably, in acorn worms[...] that share a distant common ancestor with humans." 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/2026So is this a unique trait of the human brain? That seems very, very unlikely, but this science communicator states that the research is a discovery about the human brain and about a structure/development that makes is "distinctly human"! This is huge! This is bizarre! This is... not true. 100
baezil @baezil.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Paragraph 3: "The new research finding shows that the human brain consists of two ancient nervous systems [...]a more primitive part [...] and another that makes us distinctly human, capable of poetry, mathematics and wondering about our own origins. 100
