As wet fall weather fills the lake, dewatering equipment pumps water out of the lake to lower the level to protect the coffer dam.

Otters are found throughout Nova Scotia in all kinds of wetland habitats, including rivers, lakes, coastal estuaries; these two were seen doing this graceful coordinated swimming duet in Taylor’s Ponds at Plaister Cliffs, the property protected last year through our In Our Nature campaign.

Private interests keep trying to co-opt Nova Scotia’s Provincial Parks and Park Reserves because the Provincial Parks Act is outdated, leaving special places like Cape Split Provincial Park at risk of delisting (losing park protections) and private development.

Over the course of several hours, members and friends successfully ferried the newly hatched baby turtles into the safety of Williams Lake before they could wander onto the road. This is especially important because snapping turtles are an endangered species. williamslakecc.org/2026/09/16/n...

Imagine if Nova Scotia’s beloved Long Lake Provincial Park was suddenly privatized to become a golf course, hotel or spa. Although they’re supposed to be protected forever, Provincial Parks are not as safe as you might think.

Q: What did the shy pebble wish? 🤔 A: To be a little boulder 🤭 You’ll find many boulders - “glacial erratics” - in the #HalifaxBacklands ... "a glacially sculpted terrain, with #erratics, whalebacks and drumlins. Granite and 'bluestone' metamorphic rocks were once quarried in Purcell’s Cove."

🌊 A big win for coastal protection! On August 25, Councillor Nancy Hartling brought forward a motion to encourage the Province to allow HRM to increase buffers for development along the coast from 20m to 30m. 🎉 With all of council voting in favour, except Mayor Fillmore, the motion passed!

When Premier Tim Houston and then-Natural Resources Minister Kim Masland said “Nova Scotia is open for business” in provincial parks and protected areas, the EAC decided to find out what people thought. The results — 4 out of 5 Nova Scotians are opposed to private development in protected areas.

Household garbage doesn't belong in our green spaces. Leaving bags, furniture, appliances, old paint or other waste in parks harms the environment and creates safety hazards. If you illegally dump waste in a park, you could face a fine ranging from $200-$10,000. www.halifax.ca/home-propert...
