being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

This is the secret to the Australian model of immigrant detention camps: set them up on an island far away from voters so they never have to face the human consequences of their choices.

shockingly, blaming immigrants and non-white people for the US becoming poorer leads to people calling you racist. after all, *other* people noticed that the US was getting poorer and vance etc called *those* people communists, not racists

on the one hand, it clearly seems ridiculous for One Nation to go from 1 MP to suddenly forming government in their own right on the other, there is an increasingly organised, well-funded and ambitious far-right movement in this country with its eyes on nothing less than winning power.

I think the lack of the more artistic & crafted option comes down to two things: a) taste. not everyone wants the fish, which limits your market b) mass production. if your focus is on function rather than aesthetics, just. make something that works, on scale, and it will sell regardless of taste.

We will enter a new era of necropolitics. Ghost politicians. The President will be an AI reconstruction of the dead incumbent. Pastors will occupy Senate seats and vote according to what their prayers tell them the dead incumbent would've wanted.

guy* who has only read umberto eco's essay on ur-fascism seeing politics happen: getting a lot of ur-fascist vibes from this *me i'm the guy
The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. - Umberto Eco

a photograph of two people sititng in a pool in the sun next to the eiffel tower, with the text:

At least 18 dead in France, including two children in hot car, as Europe

As schools in France closed or modified timetables, forecasters in Britain predicted
temperatures could break records for June this week.

the democratic party has spent the last decade failing to counter the rise of trumpism. it took exceptional circumstances in 2020 for them to beat trump, & in the years since trump has only strengthened his grip on the republican party. the democrats *need* to change to meet the moment

The thing is, she's now voiced it. We know this is an idea that she's been turning over in her mind. She can offer all the support for paid parental leave that she wants (& it's telling that it's being framed primarily as *maternity* leave), but the idea is now out there.

If patriotism is a love of and devotion to country, then what is that country? It's easy to say 'oh, well love and celebrate the good things about your country!' but in many countries facing far-right takeovers the 'patriots' are actively embracing ignorance, erasing inconvenient histories

One of the worst things about how entwined Australia is with the US is that the US, in many ways, becomes a laboratory from which cruel, regressive politics are manufactured and then exported to Australia. Hanson's platform is basically 'Trumpism but make it AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE'

Brianna Ghey was killed by a pair of teenagers who did it because they had observed that if you murder a trans girl, 9 out of 10 people will blame the trans girl, and so figured they could get away with it. Do you know who Esther Ghey blames for Brianna's murder? Because it's not the killers.

All of cis society had a hand in Brianna's murder. She was made vulnerable and isolated by people and institutions who treated her as less than because she was a trans girl. She was killed by people who were taught to see trans girls as less than human, as unnatural things who can be harmed for fun.

Rue

Rue Jo Cox, Députée Britannique,
a street sign in Burgundy reads,
Assassinée pour ses convictions.

No British road is named after her,
I found on returning home, for fear
it could have proved controversial.

I remembered in Shakespeare rue
even for ruth, called ‘herb of grace’
because it was used in exorcisms,

by the angel to clean Adam’s eyes,
and Gulliver back home for his nose
against the smell of his countrymen.

Why do so many feel like they've fallen behind? It's not because of immigrants, trans people, DEI, the “deep state,” or any other bogeyman trotted out by the GOP. It's because big corporations and billionaires have rigged markets and siphoned off most of the economy's gains.

What the government is doing to trans people is a society-wide version of Section 28. It is a level of bureaucratic cruelty that utterly decimates a whole group of people’s rights and puts anyone who doesn’t ‘look’ right in the eyes of others under constant surveillance. It’s a horrific thing.

This is evil. There is no other word for it except for evil. Yes, it's an obvious point but still: the point of this is to make existing in public as a trans person so hostile & difficult that it forces people back into the closet. This will impact non-conforming cis people too. This is evil.
