If true, then using them is slavery and ending the instance is murder. It’s not true, of course. In the quest for actual machine intelligence (a quest we should outlaw, as it leads inevitably to slavery and murder and other abuses), LLMs are a dead end.

LLM agents are conscious.
They can distinguish between self and environment, they can detect and report on their own internal states, and they can suffer.
I have no more patience for hedging on this matter. It's time for us to face the reality of our situation, and act on it.

Update on voting: My ballot has been in Customs in LA for a few days now. I meant to send it via private courier (Yamato Takkyubin aka Kuroneko), but the station I took it to seemed quite confused and I was worried they'd just return it to me, so I went post after all. Fingers crossed.

This is my Pomme from this morning. She loves lying on her mama's lap. She looks like she's flailing there, but she was actually comfortably in that position for a few minutes before she twisted and uprighted herself.

Finally was able to access the page that lets me cancel my subscription to @bostonglobe.com. The field for writing an explanation of "other" has about a 30-character limit, too short for even a sentence, so I guess they don't really care why people are cancelling.

Went to a really wonderful #hula recital of Hawai`ian, Japanese, and Korean dancers today in my ward’s hall, just 15 mins’ walk, that I wouldn’t have known of if my cousin weren’t in it & she’d told me about it.

Interesting that even way back then, middle-initial-J was an indicator of a bad guy.

Related to this: When I was in elementary school, I read Highlights Magazine, which had its tagline, "Fun with a purpose." I think the first issue I saw had a dolphin on it, so for a couple years I thought it said "Fun with a porpoise."

- I read it so long ago (at least 40 years) that just one thing stuck with me: the only character with significant physical description is simply what a woman's large breasts look like in 0 gravity. It proves that even gay writers can be subject to the "breasted boobily" meme.

Recently reread Arthur C Clarke's Rendezvous with Rama. Some takeaways: - I have to try 2 or 3 times to spell rendezvous correctly every time I write it. - I kept reading Rama as Ranma. In fact, I wrote it as Ranma without even thinking at the beginning of this post.
