This is a great take and something I would add is that narrowly bedding down in a 'just build more tech' / electrification tunnel-vision state is so much of that effort just ends up sucked into the maw of data centre growth instead of serving the needs of actual humans + eliminating fossil fuels

A proposal by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to power data centres in the province will only allow natural gas-powered projects to connect to the grid.

The June proposal states that gas-fired thermal generation can operate in all weather conditions, can handle high electric loads and passes the “electrical island” test, meaning it can provide stable power without grid access.

Renewables, hybrid facilities and standalone energy storage facilities are excluded because they don’t meet those requirements it says.
