On Monday, armed US Customs and Border Protection agents and CBP contractors wantonly destroyed the last of four very old cottonwood trees—possibly as old as the United States itself—on the edge of federal land near Lochiel, Arizona, to build a new border wall following 71 days of peaceful protest.

I have noticed in various offline circles — particularly media and political science — it is still considered rather inappropriate to acknowledge that the US President is evidently quite insane. It's not that these people don't *know* it; they clearly do. You just aren't supposed to *say* it. 🙃

A Ukrainian Air Force MiG-29 destroys a Geran-4 drone at point-blank range with its onboard cannon, then flies through the resulting cloud of fire. Spectacular footage, but also a good illustration of why cannon interceptions are dangerous.

Just saying... Plague is a disease that is endemic in Asia, the western United States, and other places. We know how to treat it with antibiotics. It is not extraordinarily transmissible. There are 1000 to 2000 cases a year across the world, maybe 10 in the US.

“Annihilating Iran”—which can only mean the widespread use of thermonuclear weapons against Iran’s nearly 100 million citizens—is, I’m afraid, the Chekov’s gun of Trump’s second term. He has spoken too often and too explicitly about unleashing such wanton destruction for it to be an idle threat.

This shows the reality of Gaza in shocking resolution. I've scraped and exported all the imagery, totalling around 2.5 billion pixels at 13cm resolution, for safe keeping, in case they decide to take this imagery offline. If this happens, keep an eye out for access.

I wonder if the NY Times has a Euphemism Desk to soften its stories. Trump lawlessness is an “expansive interpretation of presidential power”? A Trump-UAE crypto scheme “blurred the line between foreign policy and private enterprise.” This thread imagines history as written by NYT’s Euphemism Desk.🧵

OTD 60 yrs ago, French President Charles de Gaulle observed the 120-kt Betelgeuse nuclear test at Mururoa Atoll. Due to de Gaulle’s reported impatience, the balloon-tethered test proceeded despite warnings of adverse winds, showering Western Samoa, Fiji, and the Cook Islands with radioactive rain.
A black and white photograph of President Charles de Gaulle (far right, hands resting on a console) observing the Betelgeuse test from the bridge of the De Grasse, a French cruiser and the command ship for the test. The device detonated 25 miles away. Four other men are with him. All are dressed in protective coveralls, and two have protective goggles around their necks (for safely viewing the earliest stages of the explosion.A color photograph of the earliest stages of the greenish-yellow Betelgeuse fireball, which casts a glow over the ocean below. Three of the wire tethers securing the balloon are turning to bright plasma (the "rope trick" effect).
