I have long held that it's not possible to substantively iterate on the greatest video game known to humankind, but sometimes a true visionary comes along and makes you question your core tenets.

I think I would have enjoyed if your little balloon man had a random chance of developing cancer. When this happens, your character starts to slowly pulsate red and, by touching the near ends of the lightning, you can simulate a chemo-like experience, wherein (I’ve said “wherein” twice now in this review. Well, three times now, I guess.) you get to delay your death. After a while, however, depending on the kind of cancer your little balloon man develops (there are three preset types), even the lightning cannot delay your demise.

Third of all, contrary to what the game suggests, Sam and Dean would not be discussing their alleged parallels to the brothers Nick and Tom from the classic 1994 platformer, Snow Bros. 2: With New Elves! I doubt that Dean would even be familiar with Snow Bros. and, what’s more, even if he was, Sam and Dean would certainly not be conversing about it casually in the back of their Impala (though the game’s creator did get the make and model of their car correct at least).

Idk, I feel like the whimsy and good will that powers the hobby makes us forget that frustrating, bad faith people exist in it too. It also doesn’t help that there are some creators that can be fairly labeled grifters b/c they repeatedly rugpull backers. People suck, indie ttrpg fans are people.

Despite professing ignorance, you appear to have succinctly summed up the essence of ttrpg discourse on twitter-now-bluesky. I actually don’t even think the video games culture clash is particularly relevant here, there is just a broad group of posters that are cats primed to piss on things.

Finally there were a bunch of TTRPG people who were really weird about it that I find mostly incomprehensible because I play computer games. To them I suggest not immediately indulging in housecat-style "Ummmmm. Pissing without me????" behavior every time they see or think they see the word "videogame, " especially if you are going to post your work on the hobbyist videogame website where people can upload their videogames for free. Because there's going to be a lot of videogames there; you might have to get used to it.

I agree on some level. BGG seems to avoid acknowledging how big an influence BGA is. What I mean in general is that the ranking themselves are frankly a silly endeavor, and adding more rules to them will only make them a different sort of silly endeavor.

Before BGA dominance, Twilight Struggle, a 3hr, 2 player, abstract simulation of the cold war was the #1 board game of all time… for years. Regardless of how mechanically bespoke it is as a game, this rank obviously didn’t reflect the experience of most players, even most “heavy” players.

Imo everything about BGGs rankings must be taken with huge chunks of salt because it does not matter what lines you draw, it will always reflect the most online and obsessive slice of the hobby the most.
