It is really remarkable that in a time of historic impasse in Congress, with both houses have been reduced to complete standstills despite a mounting number of political, economic, and ethical crises, both parties have spent months working to pass a bill limiting the pay of college athletes

Pink Ladies being only 5% of total is wack. People don’t understand what they’re missing. Crisp, juicy, more tart (at just the right amount) than sweet. Gala can’t come close; after RD it’s the next most bland. There’s gotta be a conspiracy by BG (Big Apple).

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,

I think this gets at one of the deeper issues—to know what’s going on literarily also requires knowing deeply about the context surrounding it religiously and historically. And a great deal of that knowledge comes, at the least, from approaching it with an affect of honesty and respect.

The "centrist" think tank Third Way is looking to pay someone between $140,000 and $150,000 to spend their days trying to dig up dirt on DSA members. They're trying to sell this gig as "anti-extremism" work, which I find completely disgusting.
from job listing:

As the Director of Anti-Extremism, a typical day might include…

Assembling and updating a database of the DSA’s most extreme ideas and statements and a repository of voting records, affiliations, and issue positions to make available to allies and partners;
Leading public opinion research to identify and test the contrasts that move base voters away from these extreme candidates;
Overseeing the development of memos, talking points, rapid response materials, and other products that make the case against these extreme forces in American politics;
Promoting and marketing our research and materials to ensure they reach decisionmakers quickly, repeatedly, and at scale through a coordinated distribution infrastructure;
Recruiting and arming a group of young, diverse spokespeople to fight the DSA from a center-left perspective and assembling a broad coalition of organizational partners to make the case against extremism;
Running an earned media program to create a drumbeat of our message in op-eds, television appearances, podcasts, and traditional and digital media engagement.

AOC: Millennials are not punk kids anymore. We're grown adults with mortgages and kids, and that generation is starting to be decisive at the polls. And there is anger at being ignored, having our economic futures mortgaged by the generations that came before us and we're taking the reins

Question for clarification: By saying he only needed planning approval, does that mean his plan for the houses and DADUs just needed to be effectively rubber stamped by planning? Is there no existing legislation to ensure the apartments get replaced with a similar multi-family complex?

that just seems wild to me; of course a council member should rep their district, but not at the expense of Metro’s ability to successfully implement a more cohesive, comprehensive zoning/housing plan throughout the city.

genuine question: am I wrong in thinking that that type of legislative behavior seems rather, how do you say it, overtly corrupt?

This is not helping people or solving problems, Senator Murray. Take a look at your bio again, and rethink what you’re doing here. You are doing the opposite of the right approach (permanent standard time).

Still simmering over him hobbling around on that broken leg for at least 2-3 minutes before taking himself out, disrupting both our attack and defense and (in my opinion) heavily impacting us giving up that third goal that put the game completely out of reach. Stupid and selfish.

I follow you and like your takes generally, but maybe think about pumping the brakes a little here. Speaking as just one American, reclaiming our imperialist symbol is a project, not instantaneous. And part of that can be supporting the USMNT and the diversity it represents.

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. Brady did what he had to do: once he realized Robinson’s mistake he sprinted to the corner of the 18 to try to cut off Mane’s angle. Mane just had a class flick over his hands. The fault was Robinson’s for not keeping his head on a swivel before the back pass.

We've become numb to this stuff, but a president accusing a journalist of treason -- a capital crime -- for reporting on an ongoing war is not normal, and we should never accept it as normal.

see this is what the Grantland bracket got wrong; it should’ve started at 1994/1995, when elder millennials first started middle school and popular music started to more noticeably shape and contour our social selves. which is why the real millennial song is peaches by the presidents of the USA

We’re in the worst energy crisis since the 70s. Jet fuel prices are spiking. Flights are getting cut. Here’s a modest proposal: Emergency luxury fuel surcharge $1,000/gal for private jets. Buy fuel abroad? Pay by the mile to land. You want to burn through an energy crisis in style, pay for it.🧵

Just some info for those that may not know: BNG is the news arm of more moderate/progressive Baptists—e.g., American Baptists (ABC), Cooperative Baptists (CBF), Alliance of Baptists, etc. It’s not funded by Southern Baptists at all. Still an important article of note though!

I didn’t read his critique as centered on her policy (though it gets mentioned of course) as much as on her rhetoric and maybe philosophy; the argument is that there’s a worrying element to the way economic “populism” can frame your political identity, and she might do well to step away from it

wrote about this very thing a little while back defector.com/ok-but-what-...
Elon Musk's net worth, as of this writing, is estimated at over $400 billion.

What matters isn't so much how a person amasses that level of wealth—sure, there are ways more or less vile to do it, and on balance LeBron James's way is overall less appalling than S. Robson Walton's—though in looking for an index of a society's moral rot, you could do worse than to take a survey of how its richest guys got their wealth, by which measure ours should be purged from the earth. What's infinitely more important is the sheer injustice and perversity of allowing a fortune of that size to concentrate itself in an individual. It is incompatible with, and anathema to, things like democracy and free speech. It is hostile to the best interests of humanity.

In the form of money, Jeff Bezos can pump more of his will into society—into its politics, its information ecosystem, its decision-making and shape-taking—than all of the people who actually need society to function put together, doubled, and then squared. Peter Thiel, who by most reports is not nearly as rich as Bezos or Musk, not only killed a thriving independent media company, but meaningfully changed, for the worse, how this country's supposedly free press will or can cover society's most powerful individuals—over a fit of personal pique. This is not tenable! The knowledge that this type of arrangement is not tenable is older than the modern English language!
