I understand that a high prediction accuracy reveals some connection between the variables and that it can be used to identify the most strongly associated omics variables. Still, it feels so backward to me. I don't need to do a bunch of omics to figure out how old I am. 🫠 2/2

In exploratory omics studies in humans, it is quite common to evaluate the prediction accuracy of demographic variables like age and sex using the omics variables. In what situation would you actually need to do this? Isn't there some more natural statistical framework that makes more sense? 1/2

75% is insane. Government loans for scientific funding would be a crazy good investment for countries that can afford it.

My sister was involved in a similar study in ecology. Even with a relatively simple dataset and guided by a research question, results were all over the place and did not correlate with reviewer assessment. I don't have high hopes for exploratory omics studies... link.springer.com/article/10.1...

The best thing Americans can do right now is minimizing domestic spending and donating to Ukraine: u24.gov.ua Europeans should also donate more, stop buying american, invest in EU defense stocks, and pressure their governments to donate more and ramp up defense spending.

Today, the US stood with Russia and North Korea — and against our allies — in voting against a UN resolution to condemn Russia's aggression against Ukraine. Let that sink in. This is a betrayal of the Ukrainian people, our allies, our interests and those who aspire for freedom.

Elon Musk literally just verified the account 'Adolf Hitler' as an official government account on his website. It is time for EU to block it, just like they blocked the website of the russian state-sponsored media channel RT. It is the source of so much misinformation.

As an update, I think the account has now been wiped, but there is plenty of evidence of previous posts online. Obviously, that doesn't matter. Considering Musks previous meddling with German politics and the fact this happened on the day of the German election, it is clear this was no accident.

I demand that every study that uses fecal samples be renamed from a "gut microbiome" to "fecal microbiome" study, including in the title. Thus, researchers would have to focus on good study design rather than sensationalism. Stool samples are NOT representative for the gut.

Preprint servers enabling these types of solutions as an alternative to PDFs would be a significant first step. The issue is that if the big publishing houses don't adopt it, it will essentially eliminate any chances of publishing it.

I think issues arise when institutional/job/grant review boards actually DO care about them and use their publication/citations as a metric for scientific productivity. When such AI use is blatant, it should be considered scientific misconduct, almost on the level of fabricating results.

Based on the figures, it is a bit unclear whether the statistic is papers authored per researcher or simply the total number of published papers divided by the total number of active researchers independent of authorship. Is it clear from the text?

Data on the effects of preanalytical factors on single-cell omics are severely lacking (as indicated by the lack of refs in this paper). It is great that this is being investigated for ATACseq and that methods to mitigate it are developed.

My guess would be to emphasize that we're talking about interactive electronic maps rather than paper maps and to convey some idea of user-friendliness. I get slightly different associations for 'maps' and 'Google Maps', but maybe it's just me.

I think it is because, for an analogy to be helpful, it has to be relatable to people. More people have used Google Maps than Open Street Maps, regardless of any differences in quality or ethical considerations between these services.

Axel Olin @axelolin.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
Yes, especially since the number of experimental variables that might affect antibody binding is too high to evaluate exhaustively anyway. It would be great if journals/editors started requiring antibody validation for antibodies that are critical for the conclusions in the paper.

Axel Olin @axelolin.bsky.social · 18/11/2024
As someone who has worked extensively with antibodies, I agree these initiatives are crucial. It's scary to imagine that we might only see the tip of the iceberg. Studying the effects of fluorescent tagging and tissue fixation on antibody binding would also be very interesting.
