The local newspaper in Härjedalen was first to report on this. Part of how it came to their attention is that local hunting teams were being denied permits for hunting. One hunter interviewed has been hunting on the land for 55 years. The deed specifies it will be used for forestry operations. 🤡

"North" of Sweden may be up for debate though, depending on your perspective, as Härjedalen is almost in the vertical middle of Sweden. Here is a pin showing where Härjedalen is, the province that Alex Karp, just bought a significant chunk of.

When trying to understand why Palantir CEO Alex Karp just bought 188km² of land in the north of Sweden, about 80% the size of Stockholm municipality, this cartoon provides an educated guess. It's not AI that keeps these people occupied, though, it's finding a place to endure the climate crisis.

Det handlar i huvudsak om konflikt, dominans och kontroll.

Kriget rasar redan, lyder budskapet, och bara de starka överlever. Det bultande hjärtat i kampen som Palantir för är USA, och uppgiften för Silicon Valley är att stärka imperiets makt – militärt och polisiärt – med övervakningskapacitet.

Problemet (eller snarare ett av dem) är att demokratin tenderar att vara ett hinder i allt detta. Den är mjuk – Karp använder det motbjudande uttrycket ”psykologisering” för att beskriva vad han tycker har gått fel. ”Den försiktighet i det offentliga livet som vi omedvetet främjar”, säger Karp, ”är frätande.”

Med andra ord: allt bjäbb och demokratins eviga diskussioner är uttryck för svaghet.

Företaget han är vd för, Palantir, har inte bara som mål att tjäna pengar utan är också ett politiskt projekt. Det de säljer är mjukvaruplattformar som analyserar enorma mängder data. Kunderna är framför allt militär, polismyndigheter och storföretag. I praktiken vill Palantir ta över statens roll i dess mest centrala funktioner: övervakning, våldsmonopol, försvar.

I have a story about automation bias… Many years ago, I took a trip to St Lucia, which has a very small airport with only 2 baggage carousels. The carousel marked “1” was cordoned off and in pieces - obviously out of service. The one marked “2” was happily trundling around and around….

Relevanta frågor, tack. Färgerna betyder inget mer än att jag försökte hitta en balans som tilltalade mig, och att till exempel grävande i jorden blev brunt. Den viktiga ordningen är mest från vänster till höger – gruvor till konstruktion till användning till avfall – "från stöld till skräp".
