This is tomorrow... I am supposed to meet some curators and as usual I over-researched / hyperfocused and prepared a 100+ slide presentation for a ten minute meeting. But if you can, please come along to the opening, there is a great program of events, and I am sure the exhibition will be fantastic!

Noelle is a formidable writer whose work ranges from unflinching essays to beautiful, delicate poems, so I’m honored to see her engage so thoughtfully with my work. If you're over on Substack do give her a follow.

“It was a delight to hear a case made for the value of work that can sound outdated and wavering to contemporary ears,” Noelle Canty writes in her review of my book.

I love this story by Tobias about Gabrielle Wittkop. Gabrielle and I have no relation that I can discern (Wittkop was her married name), and our writing is also very different. But she deserves to be read more, and this is the perfect time of year to pick up one of her books.

Immigrants with harrowing accounts of domestic abuse were detained after contact with local police, sometimes after calling them for help. "I had suffered from domestic violence,” said one woman, whose daughter was still nursing when she was detained. “But the one who ended up in trouble was me.”

It's officially out today. 🎉 Pick up a copy from your favorite independent bookseller. If you prefer an eBook, those are now available too. Thank you to all my readers!
My book Literary Voyagers. The cover is based on an 1837 illustration by Anna Jameson showing a small sailboat on the waters of the St. Mary's River. An island dotted with trees, and a hill rise in the background. Everything above the horizon is shaded blue by cover designer David Wilson. The book rests on an old wood pile surrounded by fallen, very dry orange leaves of the American Sugar Maple.

David Walker published An Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World in pamphlet form in 1829. It's one of the most important and influential abolitionist texts in U.S. history. Yet, very few people have actually read it and many people don't know who Walker was especially among young people.

Back in my home country for a while. From The October Country by Ray Bradbury, 1955.
OCTOBER COUNTRY
... that country where it is always turning late in the year. That country where the hills are fog and the rivers are mist; where noons go quickly, dusks and twilights linger, and midnights stay. That country composed in the main of cellars, sub-cellars, coal-bins, closets, attics, and pantries faced away from the sun.
That country whose people are autumn people, thinking only autumn thoughts. Whose people passing at night on the empty walks sound like rain…

"It was his way of honoring the stroll by the shore, the abiding ever-and-always, the hermetic magic, to which, once withdrawn from the world, he had proved so susceptible..." -Thomas Mann (tr. John E. Woods)
A well used paperback of The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann, translated by John E. Woods. The cover shows a hazy view of mountains through a group of three tall windows. The book sits on gray fabric in gloomy early fall light.
