People following the Cornell case keep asking the same questions about Jane Doe. Why did she text one of the men afterward? Why didn't she call it rape right away? Why didn't she see herself as a victim from the start? My last three articles take these questions on. 🧵

I feel like your "they" is doing a lot of work here. There weren't enough votes to codify Roe. Saying "they" didn't want to is wrong--a couple of them didn't! That ruined it for the rest! If you were a Dem in Congress who supported Roe, what would you have done differently?

NEW: DHS's Inspector General releases a scathing report about the Everglades detention camp known as "Alligator Alcatraz." The OIG finds that the now-closed camp, violated multiple ICE standards. The OIG also confirms detainees were punished with placement in a metal cage in the Florida heat.🧵
OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL
U.S. Department of Homeland Security
Staff also reported that time spent in the small metal enclosures is closely monitored, and
detainees are not locked in, even though we observed locking mechanisms on the enclosures.
Figures 11 and 12. Small Metal Enclosures; Observed January 21, 2026

Underneath is a picture of a metal cage that is 4 feet 3 inches wide by 4 feet 3 inches long, and 7 feet 9 inches high. The cage itself is placed on a tiny spot of fake turf, and then surrounded by another chainlink fence with razor wire on top. The cage is covered by a roof, but it's entirely exposed to the outside otherwise, meaning mosquitos and no air conditioning.

It's silly to pretend this is an easy choice. It's short term urgency (Dem Congress) vs. long term urgency (discouraging transphobia). I hope all agree that SOME comments/views by a Dem would justify voting no. So Erin's opinion isn't stupid, you just disagree about where to draw the line.

Interesting. It's certainly true that retributive justice isn't supposed to be the goal of the immigration system, which probably makes the comparison inapt (even if one thinks that some other form of justice should be the goal of the system).

Trans People’s Identities Have Been Legally Recognized for Over 70 Years. Why Has That History Been Forgotten?
Trans people’s right to legal gender recognition is much older than we realize—older than abortion rights, Alaska’s statehood, and the Civil Rights Act. That history just became common knowledge.
