The ground squished, thick mud slipping between Lilijana's toes. A deceiving patch of moss floated to her left. She pivoted to the right, settling on firm earth. Reeds bowed, bent by a warm gust. It carried the distinct smell of Mrkava's summers: ripening rye, wild strawberries, junipers, and decay. The near-intoxicating sweetness drifted near the far edge of the village, where the pine grew small and twisted.
The bog lay there, only moss and water-so her mother often reminded. But it kept what it consumed. Generations ago her family's home was settled there, back when the bog was nothing more than a puddle. Now those weathered boards were buried deep in its soil. Her great aunt, too: wandered out on a waxing moon and never returned. She wasn't the only one in the matrilineal line to give to the bog. The first was a stillborn daughter.

The lingering scent of mud and mildew hung in the air, a long-forgotten tomb. The bed’s cast-iron rods dug into my ribs through the thin mattress. I clenched my jaw to keep my teeth from chattering and pulled the threadbare blanket tighter around my body, hugging my knees to my chest. It did little against the chill creeping into my bones. The raging blizzard had transformed the courtyard into a churning white sea, rattling the broken window shutters hanging askew.

I was not allowed visitors or to set foot outside. The faded floral pattern of the peeling wallpaper was my only reminder of life beyond these walls. The medications I was forced to swallow left a cotton taste in my mouth and a dull ache in my skull. At least no screams echoed through the halls today.
