Fishing some 5,300 years ago: a Neolithic fishhook made of wild boar tusk, wrapped with a fishing line. The size of the fishhook is 6.5 cm. It was used to catch pikes. Found in the lake-dwelling settlement of Arbon Bleiche 3, Switzerland. On display at Archäologisches Museum Frauenfeld 📷me 🏺
The picture shows a fishhook made of wild boar tusk. Only the curved, pointed end and the upper part are visible. The rest is wrapped in fishing line. The fishing line is made of twisted bast.

A rare and delicate survival from Bronze Age Denmark! A 3,400 year-old woollen bonnet made using the ancient ‘språng’ technique which produces a textile with natural elasticity. From Bredmose bog, Jutland. National Museum, Copenhagen 📷 by me #Archaeology #AncientBluesky🏺
My photo shows a woman’s bonnet laid flat for display at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. The woollen yarn is brown in colour, possibly as a result of millennia spent in a peat bog. It has an inricate lace-like appearance. It has two long strings for fastening. Made using an ancient technique known as ‘språng’ which produces a textile with natural elasticity.

Discovered in 1942 in Bredmose bog on a so-called ‘bog body’ of a woman aged 20-25 years old. The bonnet was placed over her hair which was braided and coiled on top of her head.

A common sea monster that is often found on nautical maps are physetera or spouters. They attack ships by vomiting or spouting water into the ship, causing it to sink. You can find these beasties on so many old maps. It’s like “Where’s Waldo” for cartography nerds! 🗃️📜 #maritimehistory
A sea monster with spiked gills and sharp teeth, spouts water into a ship full of sailors. From the 16th-century Swiss text "Icones animalium quadrupedum uiuiparorum et ouiparorum : quae in Historiae animalium Conradi Gesneri libro I. et II."

Surprised Eel Historian, PhD @greenleejw.bsky.social · 02/08/2024
There's a fun eel mention in Henry IV, when Falstaff slags young Hal's aggressively slight stature: “’Sblood, you starveling, you eel-skin, you dried neat’s tongue, you bull’s pizzle, you stockfish!” ‘Cause that’s how you speak truth to skinny power, damn it. 1/4 🗃️🧪
Meme. Painting of Falstaff and a young Prince Hal, who is dragging a sword.Falstaff is enormous; a round mountain of a man in high boots that could hold enough mead to ruin your evening (and morning). He is wearing a fancy belt, and his hat has an ostrich feather plume. His arms are behind his back, and he is looking over his shoulder at Hal. Beneath his walrus mustache he is speaking truths and lies in equal measure, wrapping them around each other like lovers in an airplane bathroom. If you give this man your bacon sandwich, it will be gone when you come back, and he will have a fantastic tale about pirates and a large penguin. All while wiping grease from his doublet.

For his part, Hall is slight and small. Dressed in red and uncertain to his core, he is chewing on a finger. He looks like he'd get beat up at recess. And mocked. But when he grows into that sword, he's gonna mock castles down.

Meme text reads:
"Bring me my book of eel insults
I've got a prince to drag"
