Inclusion Illusion Series
Working through my response to the SEND reforms and attempting to contribute to the policy conversation by pointing out some 'illusions', so that we can support schools to be truly inclusive.

Yes agreed, it’s all about balance. Reasonable adjustments need to be regularly reviewed to ensure they don’t morph into something they weren’t intended to be in my experience. The systems for doing this in a meaningful way big schools is an area of interest to me.

Dyslexia is absolutely a disability as per equality act but in my opinion the ‘medical lens’ can also prevent really effective intervention from taking place. I always try to look at a child’s needs (and strengths) through multiple lenses

Yes that’s a good point, would fall under ‘preparation for adulthood’. I’m always mindful of introducing reader pens/ laptops etc too early though as it definitely creates a ceiling for young people. Just one of the many things you juggle I guess.

I realise I may have missed your point entirely, by saying ‘a short cut to inclusion’ I thought you were suggesting we should put our attention on reasonable adjustments but now I fear I didn’t understand at all.

My understanding is that dyslexia can be mitigated through structured interventions? I work across Primary and Secondary so less tuned in about what happens in FE/ HE

Can you outline a little more what you think the distinction is? Of course schools should always make reasonable adjustments where they are necessary but in my experience the adjustments for dyslexia would fall more in the realms of universal provision (ie great teaching) + targeted intervention.

Some are and some aren’t? Depends what your metric of success is a lot of the time. I think it’s the opportunity cost, as well as the evidence base that the sector needs to talk about. I agree with you about cart and horses. That is an overriding feeling about the reforms.

Agreed, agreed and agreed. I think there needs to be a much more honest conversation about the lack of evidence base but I also think we need to be hungrily hunting out what works because there is so much great practice out there. Schools and teachers changing young people’s lives.

Like old school ‘action research’ and better evaluation of interventions

aurorareid.bsky.social @aurorareid.bsky.social · 09/07/2026
I agree with so much of this but I also think we need to look at the notion of evidence in education carefully. There is a danger with a purely positivist framework that we conclude, when it comes to personalised interventions that nothing works. For me, the key is building in rigour from the ground up

Presenting the genuine frustrations as snobbery is a sure fire way to alienate the profession. Is it not a form of snobbery to assume that this kind of content appeals to people..

It feels a little disingenuous to be celebrating breakfast clubs (despite this being an excellent well evidenced policy) when the funding for them in secondary ceases in July. Our kids are up in arms about their bagels going 🥯

Unless a specialist assessor is paid for (which would wipe out the notional spend for most schools in about two sittings) this is rarely the case. Common dyslexia assessments provide very little meaningful analysis of strengths and weaknesses or guidance for interventions
