I am one among hundreds of thousands of authors whose books Anthropic has used without permission to train its LLM. As a result of a class-action suit, I received a notice offering to throw me a couple of thousand dollars per title as a settlement. These are books that took me a lifetime of living, and several years of writing. The notice says that the company downloaded the books from two websites that host pirated PDFs, but “Anthropic denies it did anything wrong”. It offers me a claim number and a pin code. It’s like having the organs of my body harvested without my knowing. Now that the machine has been trained on my work, I fear that very soon, when I write – like myself – in a language that I have laboured for decades to make uniquely mine, I will be told that it doesn’t sound like my work. That it’s actually AI. What shall I do for the rest of my life? Dodge around my own way of writing? Find a new language? What shall we call this? Heart-mining? Brain-mining? Life-mining?

the latest story I heard that's actually indicative of what your average person with psychosis faces is this. 24-year-old with schizophrenia was stable, thriving until he apparently encountered bad symptoms, and died horribly for it. and then everybody ridiculed his death, including the US president

i have done objectively strange and dangerous things (dangerous to myself, not others) when delusional but thankfully no real permanent injury or public humiliation — just extra accumulated trauma and relationship problems, largely from really negative judgments of my behaviour, as if i chose it 😞

i didn’t have a draw needle handy so i tried using just one (31G) needle this morning, and while drawing was only moderately more annoying, wow did i notice a difference in how just poking through the vial rubber once made the needle blunt not a fun poke

The second problem with "usefulness" as a primary concern is that it pushes all of the harms (to self, to others, to society, to the planet) outside the frame. In other words, given all of the harms, even if the software weren't janky, there would still be plenty of reasons to oppose it. >>
