As I slowly, painstakingly read Eileen Chang’s 《怨女》I have been struck time and time again by the sentences / images / contexts which would be difficult to translate to an English of the 21st century. Today it was this: “…而时间这东西一心一意,就光想把她也变成个老妇人。” 🫠

A new favourite word from Chinese class with Amanda today: 磨合 (móhé): to break in, wear in or, if you are two people, to rub/grind/polish/wear (磨) + join/fit together/whole (合) = to learn to get along, to wear against each other until you become a together
