Some death metal recording from a couple weeks ago. Drummer requested no samples be used so we had to like, actually record good sounds. Love that. It’s not my usual genre but it turned out great. #recording #recordingstudio #drums #bass #guitar

A Yamaha drum set with microphones placed for a recording session. I’m normally a LDC overheads kinda guy but for this the Shure KSM137 were perfect, and fast enough to keep up with the details.

A bass amp with a Shure KSM32 microphone in front of a speaker. Also took a DI line.

Guitar cabinet with a Royer 121 and Shure SM57 microphones. Pretty common combination but it just works for me, consistently, and I can adjust the placement and blend for the sound I want.

I’m finally getting to one of the most meaningful projects I’ve done. I cannot believe ten years have gone by, but Kent Finlay left us on March 2, 2015. In February just before that, he asked me, Big John Mills, and Gregg Andrews to come out to his house and record his stack of unrecorded songs.

This is show goals right here. Averaging around 84dB at FOH, and this is a funk band. I can feel the bass but don’t need earplugs. Wish I’d measured the show I went to the other night because it was ridiculous. The 5 seconds I had my earplugs out were painful. It just doesn’t have to be that way.
