UPDATE: I've just added a pen overlay tool to the Algebra Tiles. It needs a bit of tweaking (rubber tool etc) and once I'm happy I'll roll it out to the rest of the manipulatives. mathsbot.com/manipulative...

Just had a delightful time talking about some Checkpoints (including this one), and a few tangential thoughts, with an enthusiastic group of Maths teachers here at #MathsConf41. Having discussed Checkpoints twice now, I should probably find something different to talk about for next time.

I'll be doing this during period 5 (last session before #MathsConf41 ends)! This presentation should hopefully deliver powerful discussions to all participants on why we should use multiple choice questions in #ALevelMaths So the big question is: Should all exam boards adopt this and why?

What warning signs could students pick up on that they might have gone wrong in an answer? e.g. - an unexpected negative/decimal answer, - an answer requiring many more/fewer steps than the number of marks would suggest, - an answer that would be weird in context (e.g. a taxi costing £3000) ...

After 7.5 years of working together, one of my homeschooled students has passed his GCSE equivalent (Functional Skills Level 2) in maths! One of the most complex and rewarding tutoring journeys of my entire career. Teaching me so much about education, neurodiversity and human resilience.

Yesterday I spoke about patterns in Don Steward's answers at #mathsconf39. Coincidentally I was revising with my Y7 daughter this morning (she has a test tomorrow) & gave her two of Don's algebra pyramids. She was delighted to get the same answer twice so I checked the rest... :)
