I’m drawing a comic, there’s something for everyone! Onion Pendergrass discovers he is the one, a benevolent nature cryptid, when the mystery of his father’s disappearance leads him to a crumbling blue Victorian deep in the Appalachian mountains, sitting on a long hidden supernatural family secret.

I did a little Blue Hollow page preview pack for editors to look at, do you also want to look?? 😮 This is chapter 2: scene 1... three varieties of ghost, two teen boyfriends, and the one type of scowl that unites them. ❤️ This is enemies to lovers YA, baby. Follow for the full pages.... soon 🌱
Sheriff Dale Abernathy and teen Onion Pendergrass approach a blue house on a gloomy day.
Dale: ok Will, look sharp.
he knocks on the door
someone beyond the door: Hold on for just a second!
Dale coughs while they wait, but Onion looks off into the yard, where many ghosts linger in the distance surrounding the tombstones out by the treeline.
Dale tips his hat back: Some house, huh? Whoever built this sure had some scratch! you heard of the waylon mine?
Onion isn't listening.
Onion thinks: There's a lot here. is it cuz we're so far in?a large man with red hair and overalls opens the door.
George: howdy, sheriff abernathy! this the kid you said?
dale: yes indeedy! william frost pendergrass. this is he! say hi, will.
Onion says nothing, but he has a black eye that radiates purple.
George: whew! that is some shiner, sonny! hope you're not afraid of getting dirty! ha hah! oops, looks like you got that one covered. We got one of your type here already, you're gonna fit right in. I'm george, you'll be working with me. welcome to the blue house! come on in, I'll introduce you to the owner.
Onion scowls, remaining silent. they walk through the interior of the house-- an old and rotting victorian mansion, the inside painted mostly blue. the wall is peeling and detritus is everywhere.
George: sorry about the mess! well, I guess that's what you're here for, huh sport? ha ha ha!
George turns to converse with Dale, Onion lagging behind.
George: the damn house got built in 1876 so you know it's all fucked up inside! been here six months and barely made a dent!
Dale: yall got any pest control issues? termites?
George: ohhh, rats? cockroaches? this and that! no wood borers though, thank god.
Onion stops at the sound of whistling and looks through an open door into another room. The geometry of the house briefly bends out of reality, and Onion finds himself staring down a long corridor full of black doorways, at the end of which a blue ghost of a teenage girl is seen stepping just off scene.
Dale smacks Onion's shoulder, bringing him back to reality.
Dale: C'mon, trouble.
Onion looks back, but the corridor is gone. Only a single room remains.

heart of the mountain
the drawing is a green-saturated illustration featuring a mysterious young woman from the graphic novel project, Blue Hollow. She has on an old timey simple green dress with belle sleeves, has very long white curly hair, no shoes, and reaches out to you as if beckoning you to follow. She just barely touches the surface of black water with a toe, and a sheer shroud over her head blows in the wind. Behind her is a mighty weeping willow on flat black. She is someone very important, but kept a treasured secret away from the prying eyes of anyone who once knew her.

if you are an ND queer who has been bodied by grief, this comic may be for you! 15 y/o delinquent Onion discovers he is the one, a benevolent nature cryptid, when the pursuit of his missing father leads him to a crumbling blue victorian deep in the mountains. Join the discord! discord.gg/dKRpVxVR9Y
teen protagonist Onion Pendergrass, (15 y/o, auburn hair with a camo hunting jacket on that's too big) looks across a sweeping valley in a double page spread. In the distance the town of Mockernut is nestled in a bend in the river. The title text "BLUE HOLLOW" overlays the right side of the spread. Onion and his love interest Bill share a loving moment. Onion has come down from the trees, leaving green leaves in his wake. As he kneels down, a series of supernatural and natural creatures follow him down the slope. Bill greets him affectionately, and a misty green substance twists around his legs in apparent affection. A crow has landed on Onion's back, but he pays it no mind. the mysterious priestess Aradia Hargrove holds a candelabra and shushes the viewer from down a long, dark hall. A sheer curtain blows in the foreground. Onion sits under the branches of a willow tree on a dreary day. The willow fronds blow in towards him, as if choking or trapping him inside. The tree's blury reflection takes up most of the drawing.

don't go yet
in a surreal wooded night time setting, two boys stand on the surface of a lake. One, tinted green, holds the other one close, tinted blue. The blue boy is covered by a translucent shroud which blows back from him where he's held. Fireflies dot his path. You get the sense this place isn't for humans.

the most frustrating thing about the nerve injury in my hand is coming up with a good idea and being unable to draw it until after a flair-up, which can take weeks or even longer to heal. I used to be able to draw for 6+ hours a day, it's really painful to lose all this creative time

the young master's troubles
Bill Hargrove, age 16, is one of the 3 teenage protagonists of the graphic novel Blue Hollow. He is mixed race, dressed in a formal sweater in slacks, but he's unkempt and off-kilter, throwing a leg over the arm of a chair with a bravado that speaks of a loss of patience. Cookie the dog stands guard at his knee. Bill is a very tired young man who is mentally unwell for a variety of reasons (ghost and/or family-related), and the illustration shows him reclined in an armchair in the library in evening, suggestively splitting the pages of a book open while looking up at you. You're not sure if what he has to say will be sarcastic or heartbreaking.

Insides
Two boxy horizontal panels on white show weather of a certain emotional landscape:

on top: a purple thunderstorm rolls into the mountains in evening, clouds rumbling and pushing fog down into the darkening valley. The sun is a small and dying distant yellow scribble.

On the bottom: close up green-gray churning river water, peaked by foam that is just a hint yellow, a little dirtier of a river perhaps than one might like.

Though the image may stand alone, the origin of the piece is actually the brooding personality of teen delinquent Onion Pendergrass. He is the main protagonist of the graphic novel, Blue Hollow, and if these drawings suggest any deeper meaning, it is only that he has a melancholy disposition at the beginning of the story.

keep back
a character sheet of the second protagonist of the graphic novel Blue Hollow. Bill Hargrove, teen stinker and generally unfriendly recluse, leans heavily on anger and nastiness to keep people from getting too close to him, a problem his love interest Onion will do his best to rectify. Bill is in a grey hoodie and jeans, and a few full body poses show him with a magical looking blue sword. (a sword with a name, a good name, for later in the story.)

a father and son with bare feet walk past an overgrown, open gate with a vegetable garden visible in the distance. The wood gate has a Pennsylvania-dutch hex sign representing growth and stability. The father and son are Ronnie and Onion, from the graphic novel Blue Hollow. Their relationship is something treasured. You get the sense Ronnie has the wiseness of a wizard, and the kindness of an angel, or is this only a child's perspective? Onion jogs to keep up with him, a trail of chicks following him from the chicken coop.

riches
all four teen protagonists for the graphic novel Blue Hollow are sitting on an old busted floral couch in a grassy field in the bright daytime. Boone Campbell, long brown hair in a blue cutoff, sits on the arm of the couch looking down at Cookie the dog as she jumps up to greet him. Maple Choi, bike shorts and pink socks, throws a loose arm over the back of the couch with a sardonic smirk. Onion Pendergrass, brown hair, ripped jeans with a camo jacket, leans forward on the edge of the couch with a hopeful smile. Just behind him, back flush with the couch, Bill Hargrove, in a gray hoodie and bare feet, offers a tired smile. His toes barely caress the outside of Onion's knee. Butterflies speckle the scene. Everybody is happy... They have a certain easy closeness.

river home
a three panel comic page from the webcomic series Blue Hollow. The first panel shows protagonist Onion Pendergrass walking through american chestnut branches in the rain. His face is banged up and small green forest spirits float around him. The second panel we see onion walking down a riverlike trickle of rain flowing downhill through the woods. The rain only comes in between select branches, making small waterfalls. Onion is accompanied by a long wormlike green spirit. the final panel sees him coming up on his house, half buried in the weeds. It looks small and shitty. His little worm friend watches on too.

a comic about my comic
a 9 panel comic. panel 1 is of an urn at a funeral. it's raining.
"My dad died a year ago this month. we never got along. he was abusive all my life, often drunk, and very hard to manage."
panel 2 is a whiskey tumbler. "everybody says he wasn't always like that, but that never really felt like it mattered because to me, he always was."
panel 3 is a man staring across a black river at night. "There's a story about my dad's family, about a father and son who lived on a farm by a river in kentucky. one night, the father drowned himself in the river, and the next day when the son saw what had happened, he followed him into the river too."
panel 4 is a river winding between mountains. "it was never officially ruled as a double suicide. That wasn't right with the lord."
panel five is a hand touching a man's forehead. "I think they were sick. I think everyone in dad's family was sick, and so was he, and that's why I have bipolar. The way he passed was ugly. death isn't like it is on tv. it's messy."
panel six is two hands holding each other. "our last moments together were..."
panel 7 is a first person pov of an arm with an IV in it. "I was hospitalized for acute stress-related acid damage to my stomach after the funeral, and returned six more times after that."
panel 8, crying in the ER. "I never told him I was gay."
panel 8, walking down the street. "The story of the father and son followed me around. it made me wonder; could that have been me? it runs in us after all. mental illness, and huge, brutal despair. I feel it all the time." panel 1, drawing at my cintiq. "My art mutated. ive seen it in other artists who have lost important people. it changes the nature of the work. grief is in the hand. its an unintentional affection."
panel 2is two men, figures in shadow, underwater surrounded by seaweed. "what's at the bottom of the river? what came out of those rolling appalachias, where dad's story begins? who were those people who went down in the water and never came back?"
panel 3 is a house at night with only the attic light shining. "what is grief? how does it move? does it have translucence? does it follow you down dark halls at night? does it show you things that aren't there?"
panel 4, crying on the floor in the laundry room. "I feel like a haunted house."
panel 5 is a hand holding a slide. "but, there..."
panel 6 is a closeup of the slide; a father, two children, and a grandma, standing on a rock looking out over the appalachian mountains. "something so human. a spark of inspiration. art can save your life. grief is a kind of love, and in this understanding, i realized i had a story inside me about all those things."
panel 7 crosses the whole bottom of the page; looking out across water to a weeping willow growing on the far shore. "maybe this is how i can learn to forgive. forgive my dad, and my family, and that father and son beneath the river, and all the rest of it, caught up on a cool gust of wind through green leaves."panels 1, 2, and 3, reaching into the fronds of the willow tree.
panel 4, closeup of an open palm with a willow seed in it. "maybe grief can be a seed."
panel 5: drawing at the cintique, view from behind. "I can do it. I can grow something incredible, and I can learn to look at the river and feel still inside."
panel 6 is the same view, but farther out. the window is visible and the moon is out. "I can do it. I'm still alive, are you listening? i didnt die after you, you didn't take me with you, I can do it. I am alive. I am alive."
final panel; a full-color illustration of a weeping willow blowing in the wind, it's reflection showing in the water it grows by. "are you listening?"

Am I still alive
An illustration featuring Bill Hargrove, the secondary protagonist of the graphic novel Blue Hollow. We see bill through a dark green doorway. The old, rotting blue-walled house is in shadows but he stands at the end of a long hall by an open window, the billowing curtain framing his head and shoulders and illuminating the curtain. He has turned back to look at you, as if stepping back from some private emotional ledge. You can’t tell if he’s lonely or already a ghost in his own mind.
