Official Statement from the 1919 Workers Collective Executive on the #CUPW and the government’s response. #Solidarity #FightBack #CanadaPost #Winnipeg

1919 Executive Statement on the Postal workers strike

September 25th, Minister of Government Transforma-tion, Public Services and Procurement, Joël Light-bound announced he would be granting Canada Post liberty to shutter rural offices and to systematically restructure the letter carrier system. This decision grants the corporation enormous power to disregard the ongoing negotiations with CUPW in pursuit of its privatization agenda.
The 1919 Workers Collective regards the minister's decision as an attack on the democratic interests of all working people. It is absolutely necessary for CUPW to fight against this encroachment by the government, which we see as exposing its contempt for the workers just demands for the fulfillment and expansion of their services to the public.
The workers demands run counter to the companys privatization push, which is visible in… (continued on slide 2) 1919workers

everything from their purchases of unnecessary EV fleets, to their sale of IT and logistics departments, to their massive expansions of facilities. This is all backed up now by the minister's claim of "insolven-cy," uncritically parotted by the mainstream press.
But this is about more than just the selling off of one of Canada's largest public services.
By granting Canada Post carte blanche, the government is attempting to use the company to dismantle one of Canada's last remaining union strongholds by purging its members and activists through mass layoffs. In doing so, it exposes that it sees the entire system of collective bargaining as nothing more than pretense, which can be easily thrown away when it becomes inconvenient. In this way the government openly declares that it has no regard for the system of collective bargaining. The serious danger confronting the labour movement today is remaining hitched to this legal circus, which risks driving workers deeper into cynicism and defeatism.
We call on all workers to immediately mobilize in support of CUPW. Postal workers must not be left (continued on slide 3)1919workers

alone to carry on as if the strike is an empty formality, or an act of desperation. Their labour is a real pow-er, and the strike is a real combat! We must rally to support our fellow workers and inspire confidence in them to see that struggle is possible, necessary, and correct.
We must do what we can to support CUPW in their struggle, but this cannot be all we do. What is happening at Canada Post is only one front in the broader war being waged against the workers of this country.
In order to resist the agenda of this anti-people gov-ernment, we must adopt a strategy aiming to organize broad majorities of working people across every in-dustry-union and non-union-from the shop floor up.
We call for committees to be built in every work-place, especially in the large plants, with the aim of involving and training the entire workforce in class struggle by leading them in direct confrontations with the employers. We call on all workers who give a damn about opposing this government's phony "moderniza-tion" agenda to collaborate with the 1919 Workers Collective in building these committees.

Also! Check out the new pamphlet that the org I’m involved with is putting out to coincide with the CUPW strike. I wrote and advised on this one too. The Strike in Canada by the 1919 Workers Collective in Winnipeg. #union #labour #canada #strike #cdnpoli #winnipeg
The Strike In Canada by the 1919 Workers Collective in Winnipeg. Cover with an image of the 1919 General Strike on the bottom. Big bold black letters are the title In 1919, the workers of Winnipeg launched a his-
toric general strike. In the aftermath of allied
victory in the first World War, Winnipeg’s workers,
many of whom had been drafted to fight, returned to
working long hours in unsafe conditions under ty-
rannical management for low wages in the face of a
rising cost of living. Meanwhile, corporate profits
skyrocketed, and it quickly became clear for all
those with eyes to see who had really won the war.
So, on May 15, 1919, 30,000 Winnipeg workers walked
out from their jobs, grinding the city to a halt.
Public utilities, like the distribution of bread
and milk, were organized to continue in the inter-
est of the workers. RATHER THAN MEET THEIR DEMANDS,
THE GOVERNMENT HAD THE LEADERS ARRESTED, AND WHEN
THE WORKERS PROTESTED, THE MOUNTIES WERE CALLED IN
TO MASSACRE THEM. The strike was crushed.
These days, ‘strike’ can feel a bit like a dirty
word. Strikes mostly aren’t taught about in schools
or given real explanations in the news. There are
few TV shows, movies, popular songs, or video games
about them.
The right to strike is extended only to union-
ized workers not represented by collective bargain-
ing agreements, and the strike may only be used to
make demands directly of the employer. If all this
wasn’t limiting enough, the definition of strike is
so broad as to include any activity which limits,
slows down, or “refuses to continue the standard
cycle or normal pattern” of operations, giving work-
ers little wiggle room for resistance. But workers
may have good reasons to strike without meeting
these conditions! BOTH UNION AND NON-UNION WORKERS
HAVE COMMON CAUSE TO USE ALL AVAILABLE MEANS TO
MAKE DEMANDS OF THE GOVERNMENT, TO STAND IN SOLI-
DARITY WITH OTHER WORKERS OR SOCIAL MOVEMENTS, AND
TO RESIST WORKPLACE INJUSTICE AT ANY TIME.
For workers whose wages are often being swallowed
up by the rising cost of living, a strike means a
serious economic sacrifice, leading many unions to….treat them as a last resort. And with the looming threat of political repression even for legal strikes, in the form of back-to-work legislation and forced arbitration, it is no wonder that many today don't understand the importance of unions at all, let alone strike action. IF ONLY A MINORITY OF WORKERS ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED TO STRIKE SOME OF THE TIME, AND IF THE BOSSES AND CANADIAN GOVERNMENT ARE FREE TO UNDERMINE AND CRUSH EVEN THESE LEGAL EFFORTS, DOES THE RIGHT TO STRIKE REALLY EXIST IN CANADA?
What would it look like if the workers stood up to these restrictions?
WHY ARE STRIKES SO FEARED?
"Strikes are scary," say Canada's monopolists, politicians, and media empires, "because strikes are bad for the economy." But what is good for the economy, in their view? A more divided, exhausted, and insecure society full of people working longer hours, from younger 'till older, doing more dangerous and more difficult work, for as little as possible. For some this is what a healthy economy looks like. If our bosses are dead set on this vision for the economy, we should ask who is actually responsible when workers refuse to cooperate.
If our bosses would have work stop entirely rather than meet even the most shockingly mild of our demands, then clearly they are not at all concerned with economic damage. And why would they be? They are rich!!! They can take the hit! So why all the fuss about economic damage? Because BY BLAMING US FOR THE CRIMES THEY ARE COMMITTING, OUR BOSSES HOPE TO DIVIDE US AMONGST OURSELVES AND PREVENT THE
DEVELOPMENT OF BROADER WORKING CLASS SOLIDARITY.
They fear that by striking, some workers might start getting the idea that real change in society could be accomplished by banding together and fighting back. That's the real motive behind all the political repression, legal restrictions, and media scare campaigns. What keeps our bosses up at night? It's the threat of a unified and educated working class movement with the determination to not…
back down. OUR BOSSES WANT US DEPENDENT, AND THE STRIKE PROVES THAT BY GETTING ORGANIZED, WE DON'T HAVE TO BE.

TAKE BACK THE STRIKE!
The working class has its own interests, and these are not those represented by Canada's monop-olists, nor by their media empires, and certainly not by their political parties. We see these par-
ties reliably serving big business interests in every instance of back to work legislation, every violation of Indigenous sovereignty, every expansion of militarism, and every minute people like Galen Weston spend out of prison. We are done being lied to, disregarded, and stolen from. WORKING PEOPLE MAKE THE WORLD RUN, AND WHEN IT ISN'T RUNNING FOR US, WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO CHANGE IT.
For too long now, the strike has been treated as a last resort, taking for granted that workers have some better way of being heard in Canadian society.
We do not. Canada is a democracy only for the rich, and democracy for the rich means dictatorship for the poor. IN AN UNJUST SOCIETY, IT IS NECESSARY TO FIGHT BACK. We should encourage and celebrate the use of every available tool in the struggle against exploitation.
To see real change in this country, we will need to unite labour and social movements under the banner of a POPULAR MOVEMENT FOR THE POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE OF THE WORKING CLASS. The strike will have an essential role to play in building this movement; as a tool for mass education, gauging our strength, building our unity, and securing strategic victories. WITH POPULAR SUPPORT AND READINESS FOR STRIKE ACTION, OUR CLASS WILL HAVE REAL TEETH AND THE STRENGTH TO TRULY ADVANCE. IT IS IMPERATIVE WE TAKE BACK THE STRIKE!
