At a glance, it looks like a combination of vertex colors and cutout geometry for the projected shadows (can't recommend the site noclip.website enough for this kind of stuff - has tons of 64/Gamecube/Wii era titles, and you can toggle off a ton of render layers to see how stuff was put together)

Often times if you play a game with what feels like strange or shortsighted decisions made in it, it’s not due to a wild miscalculation in the planning stage but a late adaptation to some other limitation (time, tech, knock on design changes) and people doing the best with what they have…. 1/2

I’d say this is often doubly true in modern development where outsourcing and codev is so prevalent. It’s much easier to adhere to realism as a target when there’s more communication hurdles in your process.

This is also the single best model I can think of to avoid 5/6/7+ year development cycles too - let a team build internal tools, workflows, pipelines, let them iterate, and repeat. Hiring/firing cycles (on top of the human pain) cause us to rebuild the wheel over and over, and is really inefficient.

Really excellent piece digging into some of the development of Morrowind. I remember playing it as a teenager and being amazed not only at its strange world, but contradictory theologies and histories. It breathed a real life into the entire setting im not sure I’ve ever seen again in a game.
