Watching Irish artists pull their support from the Ed Sheeran tour this week in solidarity with Macklemore has made me deeply proud. But I also want to say: this isn't a trend, and it isn't new.
Ireland's connection to Palestine isn't sentimental — it's historical, and it's specific. The Black and Tans, deployed to terrorise Irish communities during the War of Independence, were redeployed to Palestine after they left Ireland. The same colonial machinery that starved us, criminalised our language, and tried to erase us was pointed at another people within the same decade. That is not a metaphor. That is a documented line running from one occupation to the next.
So when we say "Free Palestine," we're not borrowing someone else's cause. We're recognising our own history in someone else's present.

I also want to say that antisemitism is real, and it's rising. Jewish people are not the Israeli government, and I never want my words to make anyone feel unsafe for being Jewish.
That's exactly why I think it matters to name the difference clearly: criticising a state's military conduct and the ideology of Zionism is not the same thing as hatred of a people or a faith. Collapsing that distinction doesn't protect Jewish people — it just makes it harder to see antisemitism when it actually shows up.
There are two truths at once: antisemitism deserves to be taken seriously, and so does what's happening to Palestinians.

• As of September 2026, over 73,000 people have been recorded killed since October 2023, with more than 174,000 wounded - and a peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet, by researchers at Yale University and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, found that the official death count in Gaza was likely undercounted by roughly 41% in just the first nine months - given that study, the real number is very likely higher, not lower.
Around 1 in 3 of the dead are children.
• UN agencies have repeatedly stated that Gaza now has the highest rate of child amputees per capita anywhere in the world, with figures cited around 4,000 children who have lost limbs — often without anaesthesia, because the medical system has been decimated.
These aren't numbers from one side of an argument. They're numbers that independent, research has checked and found to be, if anything, too conservative.

If those numbers trouble you less than the words "Free Palestine" do, I think that says something worth sitting with.
This isn't about geopolitics, it's about humanity and the very simple idea that a child's life is a child's life, no matter which government is doing the killing, and no matter whose flag is flying over the ruins.
If artists are punished for speaking with love, on basic human rights, it's a dangerous sign of the times and solidarity is as necessary as ever.
