Providing high vis jackets as ‘safety measure’ risks making people seeking asylum more vulnerable to hostility, while raising a much more basic question: why're they being housed in isolated sites where ordinary access to communities & services is so difficult? www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/2656063...

£9.95 a week. That’s all some people seeking safety in the UK receive to meet their basic needs. At the end of 2025, 4,419 children were living on less than £10 a week. No child should grow up in poverty because their family is seeking protection. 📝 more: www.helenbamber.org/resources/la...

For people who have fled persecution, violence, torture, trafficking and trauma, stability is crucial to feel truly safe. Repeated temporary refugee status risks prolonging uncertainty, affecting access to housing and work, mental health, children’s wellbeing and the ability to rebuild a life.

Families who have a route to safety should not be left trapped in Gaza because of bureaucratic or political barriers. The government must urgently make it possible for Palestinian families to reach safety & protect human life & the right to family unity until it is safe for them to return.

The problem is not new. Despite legal challenges, campaigning & years of evidence about the devastating consequences of family separation, not much has changed. Kim Johnson MP has now written to the Home Secretary, supported by more than 85 parliamentarians, calling for the government to act.

In 2024, Asylum Aid won an important legal challenge to the Home Office’s policy on when the requirement to give biometrics could be waived or deferred. Instead of helping those who have a legal right to family reunification, the Home Office continues to block their only means of reaching safety.

Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 18/08/2026
Since 2023, Asylum Aid has represented six families trapped in Gaza, because the Home Office refused to make a decision on their visa applications until they provided biometrics, something they could not do since the UK visa centre in Gaza is closed.
154
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 18/08/2026
In some cases, the Foreign Office is ready to facilitate evacuation but the Home Office isn't providing the onward travel assurance needed for families to reach safety in the UK. This means people who already have family here (in some cases had begun the visa process) remain trapped in Gaza.

Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 18/08/2026
There is a gap between what the government says about reuniting families fleeing Gaza & what Palestinians are experiencing. The Home Office is blocking the evacuation of dozens of women & children, including families who had already applied for refugee family reunion before the route was suspended.

We know that young people need stability and safety in order to be able to rebuild their lives - the government's policy of granting just 30 months' refugee leave takes this away, meaning that after being given the right to stay in the UK, young people can't plan for the future and feel secure.

We call on the government to act decisively on the evidence presented in this report: to invest in skilled decision-makers, restore and strengthen access to legal aid, and end the use of harmful accommodation models. The system must centre the rights, dignity & wellbeing of people seeking safety.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
Plans to replace hotels with large sites, including ex-military barracks, are also very concerning. We have warned these are harmful and isolating. The Home Office itself admitted to the Committee, they do not even save money.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
The report also highlights the human and financial cost of asylum accommodation. As the Committee notes, asylum hotels have resulted in “obscene profits” for private contractors, while people seeking asylum are left living in conditions that are often wholly unsuitable.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
Instead of fixing this, government risks making things worse. In March, it announced rule changes to halve refugee leave from 5 years to 2.5 years, adding bureaucracy, repeat applications and further pressure on an already stretched system.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
Access to legal advice is also critical as the UK’s immigration and asylum systems are highly complex. But legal aid rates have been stagnant for years, forcing experienced practitioners out and creating major gaps. Without urgent investment, delays and poor decisions will continue.
210
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
At the heart of this problem is a lack of investment in expertise and quality decision-making. Poor-quality decisions harm individuals, undermine confidence in the system and increase overall costs.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
This leads to a high number of appeals, with people forced into long and distressing legal processes simply to correct flawed initial decisions. Rather than reducing delays, it creates months and years of uncertainty, while people wait for Tribunal hearings.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
The Committee found that 42% of sampled asylum decisions contained significant or critical errors, which is deeply concerning. In our experience, many asylum decisions are poorly reasoned and fail to properly engage with the evidence presented.
100
Asylum Aid @asylumaid.org.uk · 05/06/2026
The Public Accounts Committee report today confirms what we see every day: the UK asylum system is inefficient, costly & is failing the people it is meant to protect. The findings confirm a system characterised by poor decision-making, chronic delays and a lack of coherent strategy for reform. 🧵

Further restrictions will cause longer delays, greater risks, and potentially life-threatening consequences for separated families. Limiting refugee family reunion also risks forcing people into dangerous journeys, including crossing the Channel irregularly. Families belong together.
