The labour party conference is underway. If you could ask policymakers one question about support for torture survivors, what would it be? Comment below 👇

Tag someone who cares about protecting human rights!
Before you hear politicians talk about asylum this week, remember:

Many people seeking asylum have survived torture.
Many are fleeing war and persecution.

The political debate mustn’t lose sight of the human beings at the heart of it.

Our therapeutic work with survivors of torture shows just how profoundly damaging detention is. Even the briefest period in detention can increase the risk of suicide and self-harm. Yet despite the evidence of harm, the Government is not only continuing but expanding its use.

No time like the present, Andy! Torture survivors wrote a letter to the new PM, calling for an asylum system built on compassion, fairness and humanity. Now it's time to turn words into action. Read the full letter: bit.ly/4gaY3wE
One month as Prime Minister:
what Andy Burnham and his Government need to do next 🧐

End the hostile environment and provide refugees with a quick route to settlement.

Ensure asylum claims are processed fairly, effectively and compassionately.

Protect the rights of children seeking sanctuary through fair age assessments.

Challenge anti-refugee rhetoric and build welcoming communities.

We're sending love and solidarity to everyone affected by the horrific attack at Berlin Pride.

Pride should be a place of joy, celebration
and safety – never fear.

Earlier this month, we marched at London Pride alongside survivors of torture who took part after experiencing persecution because of who they are.

Their courage is a
reminder of why Pride
matters and why
everyone should be
able to celebrate their
identity without
fear of violence.

Today, MPs debated the Immigration Bill. Appeals exist for a reason: because asylum decisions can be wrong. For survivors of torture, an incorrect asylum decision could cost them their life. When someone's future, safety and freedom are at stake, the appeal process must be genuinely independent.

Our statement.
Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own community, regardless of who they are or where they come from.
The events of last night in Belfast have left survivors of torture fearful for their own safety and that of their children. The people we support tell us they are frightened to leave their homes or come to our centres for life-saving therapy.

We are heading into the third summer of racist violence targeting migrants and racialised communities and it follows tactics taken straight from the populist playbook.
Most people want this country to be a place of welcome, and many are already playing their part through individual acts of compassion and solidarity that push back against the forces of violence and division. The Government must also do all it can to keep communities safe and united, including by resisting political pressure to roll back rights that protect us all.

Age assessments should be carried out by experienced social workers, not AI. "Behind every age disputed refugee is a child who has survived the unimaginable. We deserve safety, dignity and the chance to grow up free from harm." - Jean, a member of Young Outspoken Survivors.
CHILDREN’S LIVES SHOULD NOT BE DECIDED BY ALGORITHMS.
AI cannot understand how trauma, fear or the cost of survival ages a face.

Torture is always wrong. At a time when the global torture ban is under threat and the UK is taking steps which risk watering down our vital protections against torture, we are reiterating this message loud and clear.

3 reasons why torture is always wrong
Find out now
1) Torture is an extreme abuse of state power and a severe violation of a person's rights
Torture tries to destroy lives, break people, and silence their voices.
2) It is always illegal for any country to practise torture, or to be involved in helping it happen.
There are never any circumstances in which torture is justified. Not in war not in, not in retaliation, not ever.
3) The long term impacts of torture on survivors are devastating, causing lasting mental and physical pain.
Survivors endure complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, flashbacks and nightmares.

Find out more on Article 3 - the 15 words that protect so many. www.freedomfromtorture.org/news-and…
History has taught us what happens when some people are denied their rights. And our politicians today face a simple choice: defend these protections or erode them!
Kolbassia, Director of Survivor Leadership & Influencing
"No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." That’s Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights.
It’s not a technicality. It’s an absolute guarantee.
Chipping away at Article 3 will send dangerous message to repressive regimes around the world that even the most fundamental protections can be bargained away.Torture is one of the most appalling violations of human dignity. And the prohibition against it must remain absolute.
Human rights only work if they apply to everyone – either we all have them, or none of us do.

We are concerned that weakening Article 3 risks undermining the global fight against torture.

Any perception that the UK and European partners are willing to chip away at absolute protections against torture risks emboldening repressive states across the globe to flout the torture ban and threatens the credibility of international efforts to hold them to account.

Article 3 is 15 words that protect so many. Simple, powerful and absolute. Right now, the UK Government is suggesting that the “interpretation” of some of our most precious protections should be reconsidered. This is dangerous ground. Find out more: fftdonate.org/4eKB4d2
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament at dusk with text highlighting '15 Words That Keep Us Safe' and 'Introducing Article 3'."No one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment." That’s Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights.
15 words that are simple, powerful and absolute. And protect millions of people from torture
But the UK government is suggesting limits should be placed on Article 3’s protections. The UK needs to protect people at risk of torture.

As a nation, we shaped post-war human rights. Any backsliding now is a dangerous move that could trigger a domino effect around the world.
If these 15 words are no longer absolute, how can any of us feel safe?
