you caught onto my philosophy! charts are boring, interpretation is questionable. look at the moon and feel something. spin your body around like the earth and try to feel the sky. somatic astrodynamics

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

there’s a brief window where the friction is reduced but not removed and so a good SWE could be worth many times as much money. but I don’t know if that window is measured in months or hours

it’s fascinating to me that all these systems converge on JSONL append-only logs (but in practice do they get used?)

I do think there’s something to climbing up a level of abstraction, edit a plan rather than edit the code, edit the principles rather than edit the plan

Jes Wolfe! @astrolab.ist · 07/07/2026
but to be honest I’m not sure what would be a better design. we’re kind of stuck in a gravity well around the Claude Code metaphor and I suspect things will look really different in a year but I don’t know how

Jes Wolfe! @astrolab.ist · 07/07/2026
and you can simplify a fair bit of that with more recent enhancements like “channels” and subagents

a lot of Steve’s original description is claudes to get other claudes unstuck when their UI hangs, like there’s a lot of complexity there

i’m starting to see gastown as a warning. all systems where one claude sends keypresses into the window of another claude will evolve into gastown

maybe. an analogous thing was attempted in the early 2000s and it didn’t really work. the law sucks at mandating infotech security, it ends up being security theatre. but maybe it’s different this time, I’m honestly not sure

Most economists agree that by the time you're 50, you should be living in a dilapidated Victorian mansion at the edge of the forest, sitting by a roaring fire, and discussing poetry with furtive ghosts and indifferent cats.

I never figured out sextants! I do own one. they’re just a lot weirder than you might imagine. they’re not simple things like an astrolabe or a quadrant

the new “channels” feature is what sealed it for me. boss Claude talks to me over Telegram, worker Claudes talk to the boss over a new channel that we wrote yesterday. And they’re all just windows in a tmux
