I’ve just realised I’ve been writing bespoke many times in the past few months for funding applications for this exact reason lol

In this EXPeditions video, Hannah Wakeford discusses how exoplanet research is fundamentally about understanding the diverse ways that worlds are constructed and how they evolve within their stellar…

After The Green Party conference I’m glad people are finally seeing how insane and scary they and their members are.

Oh really? It could motivate archival work like Sarah said, I’ll think about it once I’ve submitted the ERC StG.

I think attitudes are changing now we are in a data rich era

I think many of us feel this way!

Yup, I agree! Lots of things to learn and discover currently sitting on MAST.

Near impossible here in the UK too. I got awarded lots of telescope time last cycle, but with my funding ending in August, I’m uncertain if I will be even in the field to see my data.

Those things are easy to verify from institutional websites or their coauthors. Just a simple google search, or slack message to colleagues.

Dr Jake Taylor @astrojake.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
They still haven’t published the original data set yet. Some cycle 1 data are still not published, but those teams are still getting data for different targets.

Dr Jake Taylor @astrojake.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I just think people who were awarded data have enough to work on and there should be a cool down period for applying for more data. Over half of the exoplanet observations that have been executed have not been published. I especially hate when more data is awarded to a team for the same target but

I consider it as part of the review process as well, otherwise there would be no need to ask me to review something and the journal could just have their own scientific editors doing it.

Dr Jake Taylor @astrojake.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I’d rather not volunteer my time to review something where I cannot verify the authors are actual researchers in the field and not just using AI. So it’s just a personal preference in how I use my limited time.

So many astrophysics ideas, so little telescope time to go around!

My earliest JWST submission and my most recent JWST submission for this cycle have ID numbers that differ by 3001, and with a few hours to go, I wonder how many more will be submitted!

Great, now I need to do a last minute rewrite of a proposal I submitted a month ago

Dr Jake Taylor @astrojake.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I totally get it, it just seems that even out of key deadlines it’s similar. I prefer to post on acceptance, I find it too vulnerable to post on submission haha

Dr Jake Taylor @astrojake.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I try and stick to a similar workload, refused lots of reviews recently and I’ve hit my limit. Strangely I’ve been getting asked to review papers that hide the authors, I refuse those instantly.

I’ve been told by people I didn’t cite their work and it was because what they were referring to was what they did after the arxiv posting, that work was not in the paper I had originally read…

“Submitted to X” “to be submitted” etc etc has become the norm on arxiv, does no one care about peer review anymore?

Not surprised, every time I’ve interacted with the AI competency people (who are in charge of all this stuff) they have been pretty clueless. They are not experts in AI.

Today we had the pleasure of hosting Francis Zong Lang from the University of Bern who gave a seminar about detecting terrestrial sized planets around M stars and even brown dwarfs! He also talked about how he is using his astrophysics skills to help inspire communities in Nigeria and Cameroon!

I’m rewatching Buffy and I’m obsessed with how so many of the shots are out of focus. They didn’t give a fuck back in the 90s.

The amount of exoplanet papers released every day is very overwhelming. When I started my PhD you’d maybe see one or two a day on the arxiv, now there are 10 a day.

BOWIE+ Seminar Series @bowieseminar.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
The BOWIE+ seminar autumn schedule is out! Next week, we will begin with a talk by Matthäus Schulik of Imperial on his work on atmospheric escape. The rest of the autumn will be highlight talks by early career researchers. To get the zoom links, see the details in our bio. #exoplanets #astronomy
Upper left: A picture of Matthäus Schulik in front of ruins. To the right, the title of his upcoming talk -- From bulk to space -- on September 10th. Below, a table of other upcoming talks from October until December.
Bottom: text describing the BOWIE+ Collaboration: "We are a UK based collaboration with a focus on studying the atmospheres of exoplanets using the James Webb Space Telescope. We work together to create proposals for JWST GO time, holding both in-person and virtual collaborative meetings. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out via our email: bowie.collaboration@gmail.com"

I learned how to do some data reduction and looked at my data to see if we had a successful observation and we did! Panic over! Now back to writing funding applications so I can stay in my job to work on my observations.

If they made cinemas for people born in a year that starts with 19 I would go. A cinema will not see me due to the downfall of cinema etiquette. Hell, just a screening of latest movies for this category would do it.

Amber Anning out of the 400m, nooo! Very sad news, she was nursing an injury and it seems like it flared up in the warm up. I hope she recovers well. Silver lining is Charlotte Henrich has been promoted to the final.
