For every one of these men who get a dramatic front page story, there are 25-50 postdocs who leave the country much less voluntarily.

As far as I understand the issue is not with the translation per se but rather with the expense reports - it was a state funded contract and the state now says the receipts don't match up... As they say in Russia "был бы человек, а статья найдется" - "we can find an indictment for anyone"

2/n - with budgets in the billions (think all US research universities combined) plus extremely lucrative properties inherited from USSR (think palaces and mansions downtown Moscow and St Petersburg). Controlling that is a good business and several clans have been fighting over it for decades.

(1/n) The institute in question has been part of power struggle in Russian academy of sciences (RAS) for decades, this is just one more episode...unlike NAS in the US which is more of a club for select few, RAS is basically running all fundamental (and applied) research in the country -

Lev Tolstoy is "Fat Lion". Pushkin is "Gunman". Lermontov is hard, I heard it's a derivative of a Perisan but don't have a source. Karamzin is definitely turkic, "black prince" or smth like that. Griboedov is the best - "Mushroom eater". Brodsky is "Wanderer" (actually fits pretty well)...

Happy 30th birthday to this paper published March 22, 1996, one of the studies that moved chromatin biology from correlation toward mechanism. Brownell et al. linked a transcription-associated Tetrahymena HAT to yeast Gcn5p, providing a biochemical link for chromatin modification to gene activation.

Don't post often but this is a good occasion: we wrote a huge review about mechanisms that preserve chromatin fidelity, and how its progressive degradation occurs in disease. Inspired by #oncohistones but mostly *not* about that. Bonus, snuck Horace into the title! academic.oup.com/narmolmed/ar...
