If you’re looking to be a hero in Portland today, go down to the cherry trees at the waterfront, walk up to the dozens of families and couples straining to fit everyone into the frame on selfie-mode, and offer to take their photo.

When traveling through four international airports this week, I had my photo taken for facial recognition purposes at least once per stop. Unlike the TSA screening photo that you can theoretically opt out from, these were all mandatory to clear customs or board a plane.

Anecdote on the current state of transit in Portland: today I need to get from inner NW (on a major thoroughfare) to the county courthouse downtown, and all maps say I will still need to walk 9 minutes to get to my destination. That is basically one third of my commute time.

Is it just me, or does this parenthetical aside about Saddam Hussein feel a little out of pocket in an article about last minute Christmas preparations from UK’s House & Garden?

Screenshot excerpt of a white background webpage with the House & Garden masthead.

“There are two approaches facing anyone in this predicament. One involves deciding it’s far too late, and you’re going to introduce your children to the tradition of Thai takeaway for Christmas dinner followed by a whole tin of Quality Street (after all, nothing says Christmas like the preferred confectionery of Saddam Hussein – yes, he really did love a chocolate toffee finger.) The second is to recognise that, actually, in as little time as maybe half a morning – and without necessarily spending a fortune – you can pull Christmas out of the bag, even at the very last minute. We’re here to help with the latter.”

Fuck the stock market reports, this is what real life is like

More than four out of five Americans, 83%, said they were concerned about the cost of groceries, with 46% saying they were very concerned. Some 47% said they were worried about being able to pay their rent or mortgage, 64% said they were worried about affording an unexpected medical expense.
About 48% said they believed they would have trouble affording an unexpected $500 bill without borrowing. One in four said it would be "very difficult"
A quarter of those surveyed said they spent at least three hours a day worrying about their finances and ability to afford basic necessities. Another 25% of respondents said they or someone in their household had skipped meals in the past year in order to make ends meet, and 26% said they had fallen behind on their monthly bills over the past year.

I think history will say that Wyden was a fairly influential/important politician given his steadfast work on some heavy wide-reaching issues like internet freedoms, govt surveillance, etc but damn if this isn’t one of the handful of very baffling positions/votes he’s made in his tenure.
