it's corny but being back in a japanese class just reaffirms how much i love learning it, studying a language so profoundly different from my native one has allowed me a whole different way of seeing things and is one of the deepest joy of my life, and i hate grifty language apps that cheapen it

to be clear this isn't me shitting on individuals who use duolingo, i think trying to learn a second language in any way is admirable. it just makes me so angry that duolingo tricks people into thinking they're learning japanese when they're likely getting like two genki chapters' worth at best

there are four different grammatical structures in japanese i can think of off the top of my head alone that translated into english are essentially "if X then Y." they all have different constructions and nuances. you cannot intuit that as a native english speaker

ppl rightfully shit on duolingo's jpn program for its treatment of kanji but i also really appreciate this pointing out the disservice it does to japanese grammar. beginners often try to translate grammar in a way that feels intuitive in their native language and you just can't do that with eng->jpn
