RIP, Richard Tapia! I recall his recounting of his mother's teachings & I hope that I can continue to live by them, just as he did: 1) Be proud; 2) Believe that you can (sí se puede); 3) Demonstrate good work habits; 4) Strive for global excellence. Richard's testimonio: shorturl.at/7KYjK #MathSky

The Ehrhart polynomial of a matroid specializes to the beta invariant

Sent an email You can too #Mathsky
On the AMS website you have shared a letter you sent to the director of NSF regarding the federal freeze. I have a question about one line from this letter:
"We fully understand the need to comply with the executive orders and to make sure that all funding is in compliance with updated regulations."
I was wondering if you would be willing to expound on that a bit, because I actually do not understand in the slightest the need to comply with an illegal or immoral executive order. For example, Executive Order 9066 issued by FDR "authorized the forced removal of all persons deemed a threat to national security from the West Coast to 'relocation centers' further inland — resulting in the incarceration of Japanese Americans." As stated in the wikipedia article, two-thirds of the 125,000 people displaced were U.S. citizens. Do you fully understand the need to comply with that executive order? Or would you have expected better?
Whatever strategy you think you were using to get help from NSF, you made the letter public and now those of us under attack by Trump's Executive Orders know where the AMS stands, and we are not okay.
Please issue a statement condemning fascism and the illegal takeover of the federal government by Elon Musk and Trump's absolute disdain for marginalized people.
Thank you,
Piper
