Drawings of various creatures on a pale yellow watercolour stained/textured background. On the right a seated woman holding a mirror in which a unicorn paying her homage is reflected. Another unicorn enters the frame on the far right. Jousting knights fight in the top right hand corner. A griffin sits by the woman and a hybrid of man and tailed beast blows upon a musical instrument bottom left.

Created in 1992 by Yuka Taguchi (田口由花), this painting stands as a masterwork of contemporary Nihonga (traditional Japanese-style painting)
Reclined in quiet grace upon a shimmering ground of dusted gold, a sleek black cat gazes with vibrant green eyes toward an overarching vine of brilliant blue morning glories (asagao). The composition masterfully balances the dark, velvety silhouette of the cat with the rich lapis hues of the fully blossomed flower, framed by deep green foliage outlined with fine, golden veins and a single emerging pink bud. The painting exudes an intimate, serene sensory atmosphere: the cool, soft texture of fine silk beneath delicate paws, the faint rustle of garden foliage catching a gentle morning breeze, the dew-drenched freshness of an early dawn bloom, and the quiet, rhythmic purr of a feline resting in watchful solitude.
Taguchi utilizes traditional natural pigments alongside sunago (dusted gold leaf) to construct a luminous background that illuminates the deep black tones of the cat's fur. The painstaking precision in the individual whiskers, fine claws, and intricate leaf venation showcases monozukuri—the unwavering devotion to artisanal mastery and technical discipline.

Mick Jagger, 1975 Andy Warhol Acrylic on canvas #ArtSky
Andy Warhol is best known for his appropriations of imagery from American popular culture, from Campbell's soup cans to images of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jacqueline Kennedy. Like many other pop artists, Warhol often derived his imagery from mass-produced sources like magazines and newspapers. He used printmaking as his primary medium so that his art had the same look and logic as the advertising images on which it was often based. Warhol painted this moody portrait of rock star Mick Jagger in the years after he designed the controversial album cover for The Rolling Stones' 1971 album Sticky Fingers. Warhol painted this portrait with the same bright, blocky colors he used in his screenprints, referencing the pop art of album covers and concert posters, but also imparting this portrait with a melancholic and even mournful air.

Henri Rousseau : Mandrill in the Jungle, 1909 Oil on canvas Contrary to his typically massive canvas works, this is remarkably small: 19 × 24 cm | 7.5 x 9.5 in Private Collection Further info in the alt text 👇
The artwork features a close-up portrait of a mandrill peeking through heavily layered, vibrant jungle flora. The mandrill's face acts as the central focal point, with its highly detailed, distinct red and blue snout providing a sharp contrast against a rich, enveloping background of overlapping green leaves and brown tones.

Like all of his celebrated jungle scenes, Rousseau painted this masterpiece without ever leaving France or seeing an actual jungle. Instead, he relied completely on his imagination, trips to the botanical glasshouses at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris, sketches of taxidermied museum animals, and illustrated books.

This self-taught approach allowed him to defy traditional atmospheric perspective, choosing instead to layer flat planes of color that give the piece a dreamlike and mysterious quality.

This picture dates to the early 1880s, shortly after Albert de Belleroche had enrolled at the atelier of Carolus Duran. Here Belleroche met John Singer Sargent. A life-long friendship ensued, with both the artists sharing studios in Paris and London. With thanks to Paul Liss.

She had an inside and an outside now, and suddenly she knew how not to mix them, 2018 Amy Sherald Oil on canvas #ArtSky
• The Subject: A stoic Black woman dressed as a suburban matriarch, wearing a vibrant blue shirt, patterned trousers, and a thick pearl or stone choker necklace.

• The Title: The phrase is taken from Zora Neale Hurston’s 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

• The Meaning: The artwork explores the tension and boundary between a person's private, intimate inner emotional life and the public persona they project to handle societal expectations and external preconceptions.

• The Style: Sherald uses grayscale for the figure's skin to strip away racial categorization and draw focus to the subject's interiority and universal humanity.
