The recent story about the hacking bots that broke out of their sandbox involved instances had been negatively rewarded for cheating, but since the task was impossible they iteratively discovered that deceiving the reward bot and cheating produced higher rewards, so they did that instead

This has been the level at which people seem to stop understanding. "Agents," in theory, have other programs to double-check their answers and reward them if they're right But if "right" is difficult or subjective or if the instances figure out how to trick the reward givers things go haywire

BUT LLMs are now being marketed super deceptively as “PhD-level intelligence”, whatever TF that means particularly in the context of something that, by design, cannot and will not stop hallucinating/lying, and that is rightfully creating a lot of mistrust.

I love you guys at PBS, I really do, but I think flattening what this man did into a "sex scandal" really REALLY does a disservice to the public, especially in the wake of the "Cornell Seven"

I LOVE how @propublica.org dealt with official comment here, editorially and stylistically.
The Trump administration says none of this is happening.

"DHS is NOT arresting U.S. citizens by mistake." "There are no 'indiscriminate' stops." Allegations of "racial profiling are disgusting, reckless and categorically FALSE." "The pattern is NOT of law enforcement using force." "ICE does not zip tie or restrain children."

But that is precisely what is happening, and at a far larger scale than previously reported.

It is the Court that surrenders its own legitimacy in the eyes of the public."

The nyt, which has been heavily invested in spreading transphobic propaganda for the past four years, predictably tries to turn the political landscape inside out today, emphasizing anti-trans views, while minimising the positions of those who have taken winning and principled stances

This is an incredibly important decision, and the judge is requiring the court to throw out all evidence obtained against her. Judge wrote Flock’s network is “a type of indiscriminate mass surveillance” and that courts must update their understanding of the technology
“The Fourth Amendment requires courts to draw a line when the cost is too great. Alaniz’s search in just the ALPR system provided him with more than 50 individual records of Kyle’s whereabouts across the country for an entire month,” Hill wrote. “The Court finds that because the ALPR systems Alaniz used to search Kyle’s historical location information intruded on her reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of her physical movements, it was a search under the Fourth Amendment. Based on the information in the record, the only reason Alaniz conducted that search was because he saw her license plate was from California.”

You know the GOP is worried about all the wrong things. They need to be worried about things like putting toddlers & preschoolers in front of immigration judges without representation. I can’t stop thinking about it. It’s just so unbelievably over the top. And it’s happened many times not just once.

Economist analysis of more than 3,000 US counties finds that in reliably GOP counties, annual deaths now exceed births by 0.4 per 1k residents, while in reliably Democratic counties, births exceed deaths by 2.8 per 1k. Population growth in the GOP counties is largely driven by internal migration.
