Like according to the McGuire book there was one ninth century abbot who mostly wrote to people for the purpose of requesting books. He was using his friends for their library access.

As I was reading Heloise's letters to Abelard it struck me that she kept referring to her nuns and using the pronoun "we," like she expected them to read them as well as Abelard's responses.

Yeah something that irritates me when reading secondary sources about Alcuin's letters and Heloise and Abelard's is that modern people tend to interpret medieval letters as confessions of people's deepest most private thoughts when they almost certainly weren't.

And people go like "so you think they were 'just friends?'" I think Alcuin and Arno cared about each other in a way that might read as romantic or sexual to us but didn't to people in the 9th century.

Whether Alcuin in his heart felt some kind of attraction to Arno is not something I'm able to find out, and also not what interests me. What's interesting is a) the language he uses to describe the relationship and b) the fact that it was publicly acceptable between two churchmen.

Alcuin's letters to Arno also were semi-private. He mentions burning letters about things he doesn't want publicized. When he writes about e.g. wanting to kiss each of Arno's fingers and toes I don't think he's admitting to a romantic/sexual relationship, but I do think he cares about Arno a lot.

I wish people would stop referring to Heloise and Abelard's letters as love letters because they aren't. They were semi-private at best. H/A were not going to confess anything that would get them in trouble. They're a meticulously performed commentary on the Song of Songs.

Sorta of telling that when I researched language that medieval monastics might use to describe intimate relationships (variously defined) I really didn't get much from the letters of Heloise and Abelard but I got loads from Alcuin's letters to Archbishop Arno.
