Poised in a moment of sublime ritual suspension, the geiko Tsuneyu of Kyoto’s Gion Higashi district performs a classical dance portraying a Shinto priestess invoking an early spring blessing for a bountiful rice harvest. She is crowned with a striking, gold-and-black striped ceremonial cap (eboshi) emblazoned with a crimson sun disk, her face enfolded in flawless porcelain-white oshiroi makeup. Over a lime-green silk kimono embroidered with delicate seasonal motifs, she wears a diaphanous, pale yellow gauze mantle (chōken) secured at the chest by thick, vermilion braided silk tassels. In her outstretched right hand, she holds an opened mai-ōgi (dance fan) brilliant with fan-shaped panels of metallic green, cobalt, and gold. The image evokes an exquisite sensory atmosphere: the crisp, wooden snapping sound of a cypress fan opening mid-gesture, the soft rustle of starched silk gauze gliding over heavy brocade, the lingering fragrance of sandalwood incense and paulownia stage wax, and the breathless, electric hush of an audience mesmerized by sacred movement. This performance captures the refined artistic heritage of Gion Higashi, one of Kyoto’s historic hanamachi (flower towns), renowned for preserving the intimate, classical arts of traditional Japanese dance (Nihon Buyō). The dance synthesizes theatrical stagecraft with ancient Shinto agricultural rites (ta-asobi and kagura), wherein priestesses danced to appease regional deities (kami) and ensure fertile soil before the spring rice planting.

Ein verwitterter, steinerner Grabstein mit spitzem Giebel steht vor dichtem Grün. Im oberen Bereich ist ein Relief mit einer liegenden Figur und einem Kreuz zu sehen. Darunter befindet sich eine rechteckige Inschriftentafel mit klar lesbarer, aufrecht stehender Schrift. Die Inschrift lautet: 'Ruhestätte des Herrn Jakob Hyrtl, akad. Kupferstecher, gestorben am 15. Oktober 1868. Er ruhe in Frieden.'
