Public Domain Art is the lifeblood of small tabletop rpgs, but it can be a nightmare trying to find the right art and license. This week, I’ve re-uploaded my old list from 2020 (with updates) of public domain websites. That's 500,000+ public domain paintings, photos, maps, and film. Link below 🔗👇

so I've finally got around to reading Strange Bedfellows and it's immediately shot straight into my top 5 SFF ever - cheek by jowl with Perdido Street Station and The Expanse. Genius writing, gorgeous art and brilliant design. Get amongst it.

genuinely just think this is a normal part of being an artist. it's not reasonable to expect a creative to be at the top of their game every day we just live in a society that expects nothing else

you can do all the planning in the world and give yourself buffers but shit happens. and you need an editor (and ideally an agent!) that will be in your corner if your life explodes while you're making your book.

0130

Ariel Slamet Ries @arielries.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

the part in here about turning down a deal that you cannot feasibly meet deadlines for and/or your publisher is unreasonably rigid about sticking to schedules is so important. i would be unbelievably fucked right now if my editor wasn't so generous w scheduling around my illness.

Ariel Slamet Ries @arielries.bsky.social · 06/10/2026

really great blog!! i also recommend, if you are making a graphic novel alongside, say, running a patreon or doing small freelance jobs that you calculate your work day as less than 8 hours so that you actually have time to do that other stuff within your work day.

She's yelling about graphic novels again. I wrote a blog post about how to track work hours and do the math to build better work schedules. This speaks to graphic novelists specifically but it's good info for any freelancer!

ultimately tom cruise and innaritu don't really need my backing to get asses in cinema seats but i think they are trying to do weird and interesting stuff with this film which I'm always more interested in than artists playing it safe

I've seen it unfavourably compared to Don't Look Up as a climate change satire but it's not really a climate change satire at all. I think it's about the limitations of Art and Comedy's ability to meaningfully save us from a materially bad world. Also there's a funny cat animatronic

1140

Ariel Slamet Ries @arielries.bsky.social · 03/10/2026

The trailer completely hides a major framing device (awesome) but some of the reviews read like they have also watched the film ignorant of the (impossible to ignore) framing device in a way that is kind of baffling
