When I was up for tenure as a young English teacher at the Bronx High School of Science, I had to submit a portfolio which included lesson plans, a set of grades papers, assessments, and other teaching artifacts. The principal reviewed these documents, and they, along with her observations in my classroom over the three years I had been teaching in the school to that point and the hour-long “tenure meeting” would determine if she would grant me tenure, which was hardly a rubber stamp in that school at that time.
