i recently read something in which a bunch of bay area EA/rats are interviewed and one of them is scott alexander and he says, "oh yeah we did all the hard stuff already with AI so now it's just finishing the easy stuff, the lizard brain stuff" and i was like hold up

my husband and i both use Claude routinely, although for different purposes, and every time i see people talking about "AI," both pro and con, i just have no idea what anyone is talking about. nothing anyone says seems to line up with mine or chris's actual experience of using the thing.

what hanania's story illustrates is that there is no social cost to misogyny, and i'm glad @aselrod.bsky.social noticed, if no one else has. liberals do discuss it as specifically a right-wing/Trumpist theme, but don't take enough responsibility for their own role.

love to exercise at home, love when i'm doing my flexibility and breathing exercises there on the floor while the cat vomits next to me. can't get that in a yoga studio.

the book is called The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, seems innocent enough. picked it up thinking it was going to be a straightforward history sort of thing, instead i am instantly thrown into the Trash Can of Ideology.

Many of the people Labor Day is celebrating don't get Labor Day off, so if you go out to eat on Labor Day leave an unreasonably big tip. That way we can preserve the spirit of the holiday.

i admit i used to think the paperclip maximizer thing was stupid, because, jfc, just pull the plug! shut down the grid if that's what it takes to save us from the paperclip maximizer! but now i see that any people who might be able to make that decision would spend the last days of humanity arguing.

i am never going to get over the fact that i have talked to so many doctors about my "insomnia" and the best they can do is tell me to try to relax (i did finally coax some ambien out of one) and within two hours of using Claude to dig through stuff i knew what was wrong with me and how to fix it

doctor has asked me previously if i have "tried taking melatonin" and didn't ask anything else about it when i said it didn't help Claude: from what you're describing, taking low-dose melatonin earlier, 6-8 p.m. would help, here are some links to SciHub (I CANNOT HOWEVER DIAGNOSE YOU)

very offensive to me that the bots have been allowed to say things that humans say for performative casualness reasons ("hang tight," "no worries") bots have no reason to speak this way! there is no casualness to perform here!

as we're waiting in the queue to go up and receive communion, everyone who is on their way back to their seat is touching friends on the shoulder or arm in greeting, shaking hands, smiling at each other. i think i don't care if anyone believes in god, more people need this in their lives.

unfortunately (or fortunately?) i managed, in homeschool, to convey to my kids very intuitive understandings of a lot of science and math concepts and not a lot of "answer 10 multiple choice math questions in 5 minutes" kind of skill. i'm not super convinced the latter is useful outside school.

i said my husband talks about Claude a lot, and this is the upshot: it's about as helpful in his job as IntelliJ was 16 years ago, maybe a little more just because LLMs, with a deep history of machine translation, help with the translation tasks between the various languages a programmer has to know
