Hey Ordo Templi Orientis aspirants; get a copy of Secret Rituals THEN get a copy of OTO Rituals and Sex Magick and with a bit of dilligence and elbow grease you can mote or less easily sus out the key components relevant to a private AA styled practice. It’s not like they’re making new 9ths anyway.

August 11, 3114 BCE may be the earliest common start date but we have some stele that annotate back 90 Mya and one long count inscription with 13 as the supra-date in 19 places after the b’ak’tun (probably cosmological or metaphorical, still interesting that they were thinking in those scales tho).

“A Confluence of Magical Arseholes” is a musical comedy in the vein of Monty Python about W. B. Yeats, Aleister Crowley, and the Golden Dawn (or, I’d wager, the silly urban legends around the Battle of Blythe Road). It’s part of the Minnesota Fringe Festival, and showing on August 12, 15 and 16.

Fringe review: ‘A Confluence of Magical Arseholes’ leans into its energetic chaos
With props, live music and exceptionally talented performers, the confusion is part of the fun.

Susan Strong was an American soprano, had an affair with Crowley, possibly briefly engaged in 1899, reason why Crowley was into Wagner, and here’s a recording of her singing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQrX...

YESSS Give me the Randall Gair biography!
Edward Alexander Crowley’a son, Randall Gair Doherty aka Aleister Ataturk aka Aleister Macalpine aka Charles Edward d’Arquires. Black and white photo circa 1960something. He looks like a young lean Crowley with a shaved head. He holds documents he’s writing upon in one hand with a pen and the other has a cigarette in a holder. He wears a suit with a pencil thin necktie.

Every few months I hear some stuff from inside the publishing business that makes me baffled how the deluxe book market even gets by (the secret being that they largely don’t but eventually these market compressions are going to come for print on demand too).

On a more personal note I finally might be starting to catch up on my own backlog of needful ritual obligations after some logistical hurdles and holy heck it’s nice to cross some stuff off my list, which itself is a double edge sword because it just makes more room on the list.

Serious question: In the last 15 years, what Thelemic or adjacent works feel as fresh, concise, and clarifying to you as ARARITA: Elaborations on the Star Sapphire? Because I don’t find myself circling back to many recent books as often as with it.

Everyone loves pretending to be rational and enlightened until they encounter something that activates half remembered podcast episodes that pander to the completely unexamined fact that they’ve spent decades simmering in the background radiation of Christian bigotries nationalisms.

Carlo Ginzburg, RIP. Loved his microhistorical studies, especially 'The Cheese and the Worms' which considered the 16th C miller and heretic Menocchio from Friuli and inspired this ballad with his stubborn and original vision of Creation. This got him into big trouble.

One thing being around religious institutions and magickal Orders has taught me, and it’s also true of politics, is that there is a subtle but important distinction between the seriousness of the self important and the seriousness seriousness of integrity.

A deeply revealing pattern in spiritual book spaces: discussions about racism and cultural appropriation rarely gain traction until a white creator highlights them. When #BIPOCauthors share the exact same lived experiences and critiques, they are frequently met with silence or defensiveness.

I know this is an extremely unpopular opinion in my circles but nothing should make you rethink your appreciation of Jung quicker than reading his comments in the introduction to the Bardo Thodol where he essentially says that the Alien Worldview of the Exotic Oriental Mind can drive you insane.

Take your magical ring. Open your Holy Books to a random page, close your eyes, drop the ring. The word it encircles is your oracle. That’s how Rite of the Equinox runs, anyway.

Oh yes, I am an ardent supporter of the UK library system, #OccultSky. One of the first things I did when I moved to Cardiff was grab a library card. And it's heartening to see a small press edition of Crowley's Book of the Law on the shelves next to the usual AI slop New Age dross.
A green, 1920's art deco inspired cover for Crowley's The Book of thr Law, in hand, in front of a rack of books at Cardiff Central Library.

Beyond the sexism there’s a bit of ageism in there given how young the most vocal adherents skew. Which is odd because a good coven tends to have its shit together at least on par with other more “traditional” looking organizations and rarely resembles what’s in many entry lvl books on the subject.
